P0420 is a cat innefiiency code. These are covered for 8 years/80 ,000 miles under the federal emissions warranty. If you are our of the warranty than you I'll be footing the bill yourself.
You have a couple of options. Replace it with an O.E. cat from the dealer. Or you can replace it with an aftermarket direct fit fm a reputable manufacturer.

I would check air filter, if you havent changed it, chances are its plugged, if not air cleaner, most likely MAP sensor, take to autozone, they will do a free diagnostics if you ask them(and if able to drive it there) they can tell you whats wrong by the code they get, it only takes a few min. If you havent changed air filter and your car is used, I would do that first, If you cant see through the filter, when looking twords the sun, its plugged, just bend it slightly to look between folds, most of the time its obvious. make sure when changing air filter, you vaccum out the air filter holder...hope this helps...bernie
Autozone is currently dealing with a class action lawsuit and may not check your codes. I would call ahead to see if they are still doing this in your area.
An air filter will not cause a catalytic converter code!
Checked the air filter. Clean.
is there 2 oxigen sensors on car, if there is, it could be a bad rear sensor, that could explain the cat code..
It's OBDII, it has to have an o2 before and an 02 after the cat. If it did not have one after the cat how would it know the cat was bad?
Its not the O2 sensor. He has a bad cat if this code comes up!

Pulled the codes earlier this week, had coolant temp sensor, oil pressure switch. replaced both. Checked fuel pressure, its good. Went to clear codes, Had po420a. Cleared codes, drove car about 10 miles. Then 2 tenths of a mile from house it jerked and as i came to a stop sign it died. Started right back and drove home.
I will check the air filter. Had not thought of that.
cheapest way to start, alot of people dont think of air filters, i change mine 2x a year, its up to you how many timesyou change it but at least check it a few times a year, depending if you drive in dusty conditions alot then pay alot of atten. to air filters...can save you on cosly repairs, a motor runs on more air compared to gals of gas..hope it helps ya..
When the car died tonight, it did not set any codes.
Did it start right back up?

Would a bad cat cause the car to **** and miss then die? But not all the time, I might drive the car 3/4 days before it acts up. Most of my experience with bad cats is rough idle and smell.
