SOURCE: What fluids do I use for my transfer case?

Transfer case, Dexron II or Mercon auto trans fluid, Fill/check level plug above, drain plug lower (both on front face of housing), 20 ft lbs. to tighten, I believe I use a large crescent wrench to remove/install (of course I couldn't use my torque wrench).

SOURCE: 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Both the transfer cases used during that time look similar. See the following diagrams:

NV242: http://www.wjjeeps.com/nv_242_01.jpg

Here are instructions w/ pics:

(If you have the 242 I believe you can use ATF+4 instead of the special Mopar fluid but I would check first to make sure).

My 1993 jeep cherokee won't shift into full time 4 wheel drive it will go to part time how doI adjust?

Sometimes the shifting levers get hard to move. Spray a good lubricant on the linkages that shift the levers on the transfer case

Won't go into 4 low

Have you tried shifting the automatic transmission to neutral, or if manual transmission- place shift lever to neutral position, then shift the transfer case to neutral position wait a couple seconds then try shifting to 4 low- if you have manual hubs, engage those last. This removes most of the potential mechanical resistance that should allow for the transfer case to shift.

If it still will not go into 4 low you may be dealing with damaged teeth, bent shift dog or worn internal bearings inside the transfer case. As I recall, that was NOT a shift on the fly transfer case.

O99 jeep grand cherokee 4wd low does not work

This jeep is all wheeldrive and has a lever to go from 4high and 4low,first take a look at the transfer case linkage to make sure linkage is connected and not broken or frozen, alot of times the linkage freezes up from lack of use and sometimes bends or breaks so look at that first. if the linkage is good and no problem with it then we go on to the transfer case, take note that bent linkage will make it not go into 4low, okay the next step will need the transfer case to be checked for a inside bent fork or broken fork this will need to be done by a shop. the case needs to be removed and opened up to check the shift fork. good luck, hope this is helpful.johnjohn2_64.gif

95 Jeep Cherokee shifts into 4Lo but not 4Hi

Mate.I would get the shift linkages checked for looseness and /or play first. Also check the oil level in the transfer case. These things 1st.The lever is adjustable in the linkages and some small wear may be a problem. It is a first step and cost nothing to do.If this doesn't fix the problem, you may have to look inside the trans case.Let's not hope this yet.I hope this helps you

The front in isn't engaging, we recently bought it and don't know much about it.

check your linkage and make sure it is actually engaging when you shift to 4wd. if not you may need to adjust the linkage. also make sure that the transfer case fluid has been changed and is in good condition. if you haven't changed it there is a drain plug and a fill plug on the back of the transfer case. most transfer cased use transmission fluid but check your manual to be sure.

Transfer case pops out of 4-lo

Either your linkage is not properly adjusted or the shift fork is a bit worn inside the transfer case. I have a bit of wear on my own and shift into low range while rolling with no load, between 5&20mph and it works fine except that I need to anticipate needing it before hand. One important rule...If it grinds, don't force it into gear. That will cause damage.
Also, if you just got it, change the oil in there...you have no idea when it was last serviced.
