I have the same problem, although the shift can be quite sudden at higher speeds. I am going to change the fluid and filter to see if this helps. Previous owner I think used Dextron when he should have used VW ATF.

Not overly familiar with Audis but it sounds like either a.) you have an electronic tranny that has a serious bug or b.) there's a problem in the computer of the car itself. What is sounds like is the car is taking a long time to "understand" that you're telling it to move forward. How new is the car? When you push on the gas before the three minutes, what happens?

50 horse 4 stwont go into reverse gear due to shaft problems

the drive shaft just drives a pinion gear in the prop box that drives to gears that spin in opposite directions all the time
by selecting forward with the selector rod , a dog gear is moved forward to mesh with one gear that is turning or moves the other way to engage the other gear that is turning
that is the forward or reverse action for the prop
if you have forward but no reverse the it is not a drive shaft problem but a selector rod adjustment that is not moving the dog far enough to engage the running gear

I have an 2002 Audi a4 1.8t it will not go into reverse and will not go into drive and won't move. Could that be from the shift cable?

If it has recently started to do this it might be due to a faulty gear selector or a collapsed torque convertor.
Looking through the responses to othe similar issues in other cars it seems that in the States there are devices built in that prevent the engaging of gears if the brake laights have failed. Check these also

My Audi 03 A4 shutters on take off like a clutch engaging and dis engaging but it's auto...

If you have C.V drive joints worn this maybe why there's a shutter when taking off,did you get them checked out recently, also along with worn CV drives joints a bush on the wish bone arms on the inside near the chassis can be wearing out,so the car wheels move forward a few inches before the chassis and car do.Also if its an auto, your transmission oil may need changing, its tick and clogging the sive, filter.Or thick in cold weather before heat up.

Sometimes can't get reverse gear Audi A6 2004 Auto 1.9TDi UK

Unless your shade tree mechanic is an Audi expert, go to the dealer who has all the books and diagrams that tell the tech exactly where to look. The other guy may want to replace something just to troubleshoot and the factory tech should know exactly what to replace or which plug is loose.
