My '88 Jeep Cherokee sputters a lot. This past weekend, it acted as though it was running out of gas, which it wasn't. It made a popping noise, almost like backfiring, but not as high pitched, more like it was choking. We have replaced the alternator (unrelated problem), plugs, wires, cap, rotor, MAP sensor (because we were told by a shop it is running rich), and now the O2 sensor. My husband found a damaged sensor that could either be a knock sensor or water temp sensor. It is located on the left side of the block (it's a 4.2 L, Straight 6) but before spending MORE money, does anyone have any advice??
It sounds like the engine isnt getting enough fuel. I would suggest changing the fuel filter and possibly testing the fuel pump to see if it is bad.

This website gives a general method to checking the pressure. Basically you disconnect the fuel line running out of the pump and connect a pressure guage on the end. You then either have to turn the key or jump the pump. Without looking at the car, I couldn't get specific because each car has a different system.
the knocking would be because the engine is mis-firing so the is something with the electrical system (distributor, etc). What is wrong with the water tem gauge?

It is misfiring, and the shop told me it is because it's running rich. I don't know that there is anything wrong with either sensor, except that it's visibly damaged. From the descriptions I have been able to find in the manual and online, the location makes me think it's the knock sensor. I don't know enough to know if that would have anything to do with the problem I am having. The temp gauge seems to be fine.
well mine is popping too. i have to floor it to excelerate. it acts like it isnt getting power. about 20-25mph i have to floor it. it will rev up but wont excelerate like normal. ive changed my fuel filter, sparkplugs, fuel injecters also i switched the gas out ect. any suggestions e-mail me at fatty_62492yahoo.com
