Gyver here , twenty year wrencher.. sounds like either you got the timing out on the distributor , or the timing on the crank and cam are off. if you know the timing marks were set cam at twelve crank at six the dist is out. common for guys to set cam and crank n marks one above the other but then you must rotate engine 360 degree before you set dist back into hole. pull dist up rotate 180 degree .let me know

If you have a small block there are only 2 kinds of starters a straight bolt pattern or slanted. Make sure your not putting a small block starter on a big block or vise versa. Also check the the starter specs for straight or slant bolt pattern.

Check the voltage coming from the battery and check it again at the coil.I suspect you are not getting the proper voltage going through. Clean all the terminal ends to bare shiny metal and make sure all the connections are tight. If I remember correct your truck still has the HEI setup with the coil in the top of the distributor cap. If all the voltages are good, 12+ volts you should replace the coil. Hope this helps.
