Brake chatter When I apply brakes on my 2007 avalon I get a high frequency "chatter". It's kinda like a warped rotor, but too high frequency for that....and, I replaced the pads and turned the rotors and it made no difference. Could it be and ABS problem?

How fast are you going when ou feel it?

Turned rotors and new CERAMIC brake pads are less than 2000 miles old. I don't have to be going fast..like less than 20 MPH coming to a stop light.

If you hear the moan of the abs pump that you have a condition known as overactive abs. Especial if you feel it kick in under 5mph. What is happening is a signal from a wheel speed sensor is dropping out at slow speeds fooling the abs module into thinking the wheel has locked up. The abs module responds by activating the abs system in order to unlock the wheel. If you don't hear the moan of the abs pump than you have either a warped rotor. If you feel it more in the steering wheel than its the fronts that are warped. If you feel it more in the seat of the car than its the rears that are warped. It make no difference when parts where replaced. If the wheels are not properly torqued or the hubs are rusty than a rotor will warp in a heartbeat! Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Hi,

Two days ago, I was driving over 50 mph, and slammed hard the barks to avoid a accident with a car in front of me. Soon after, I heard something like the ABC is activating when he car is getting to close to stop, may be less than 10 mph.And now, it does it every time when the car is coming to stop. It looks like abc is activating, but I don't know what part of it. I recently replaced, the wheel bearing and hubs on both sides in the front, brake pads, and my rotor are 7 months old. if you had this experience place share it with its cost.

Any idea is appreciated!

Thank you,

back to dan , hey dan, you never said when it chatter, feet off pedal or ? lightly pressed or slammed on.? no the Abs IS INACTIVE untill a tire slips, my guess is its not chatter at all,its just Squeeling brakes, that is normal. brakes are not 100% squeal proof on any car, sure the engineer attempted to make it like that with antisqueal shimps there,(ARE yours missing) but I use, (no parts missing) brake pad glue, its a glue that goes from piston to ship to pad, (glued to both sides of shim) end squeel, chatter with new pads, is just loose shims, same answer, disc brakes are simple, one other fail point is caliper guides, are yours free? if not the caliper will DESTROY one pad, and cause many issues, leaning how to service brakes takes training, what to do ,what to inspect and how ?,tops the list., throwing on pads, is a fail moment. leaks, ? some pads have noise makers for worn out sounds. if all this is good, use the glue. to see if parts are missing , (a dah moment) takes a trip online to toyota.com see those parts pages, see YOUR brakes, bingo , all parts there, ever itty bity part, that many poor brake shops leave out. (shims tops list) ive seen vasts parts missing from these Shops of goons.....sad but so true. this.

jmisy, buggerd his abs sensors.? you need service, is say not safe to drive., first off, lean the effect of ABS so you can post correctly, find dirt or grass , drive slow, say 5mph and slam on the brakes, now you now that sound and feel of abs ,activated. its called brake modulation. if the brakes make noise, (not just squeal) they are bad, and are dangerous. you never stated all symptoms then ask for where to find it, first, is inspectins, then diagnosis and last is parts. start your own post, with all symtoms, sounds, abs Tripping off, bracks pulling , pulsating,, grabbing and scan the PCM for ABS DTc ERRORS TOPS LIST ,ever heard of a scan tool? the abs does not trip off , until the wheel sensor, detects, a skid (low RPM on that tire) then it begins the modulation until the tire stops skidding, this is what it does. 1996 to now, (or more if traction controls options) but ABS is key system. now. I say get the car seviced with a real ASE CERTIFIFED TECH.

SOURCE: warped front discs

Here is what happens to cause this, rotors are as thin as poss to reduce weight and increase MPG, when you turn them you remove material and make them even more prone to warping the less steel the less heat they can dissipate, the hotter they run the more the are prone to warp, if you tow something the problem is compounded. To avoid the same issue in the future replace the rotors with name brand new ones, use the best brake pads available, cheap pads can and do cause rotor problems. I worked as a tech for 30 years and this explanation is what I learned in many brake classes I went to and in shop with hands on experience.

SOURCE: My 2002 Toyota Avalon is shaking when I apply the

That's what I would imagine. It is usually the front rotors that warp due to the fact that they work a little harder than the rears. However, rear rotors can warp. If you feel the shake more in the body of the car, so in the seat and you feel like the whole car is moving and the steering wheel stays mostly calm then I would imagine the rear rotors are warped. However if the shaking is felt mostly in the brake pedal and the steering wheel shakes too then it is probably your front rotors. Shops can usually resurface rotors and it may be cheaper than buying new, so that could be an option for you.

Steering wheel shakes at high speed when brakes are applied

This is caused by the front disk brake rotors being warped from heat and running out of true, the wobble of the warped rotors causes the wheel to shake when you apply the brakes, it is worse the higher the speed you apply them at. Have the front rotors machined flat again or just replace them.

if this only happens when you apply the brakes it most likely sounds to me like your rotor is warped and needs to be replaced... if you are going to be doing this make sure that you replace both sides and do the brake pads as well.. the brake system on a car is not something that one should cheap out on.

07 camry brakes clatters when brakes apply, Can you help with the fix??

If you are saying the brakes chatter or there is a vibration when applying the brakes your rotors are warped. Remove the pads, have the rotors turned at a machine shop, and replace the pads with new ones, even if they look good. Warped rotors are caused by excessive braking at high speed, riding the brake pedal, or not correctly torquing the lug nuts to the correct lb/ft when installing the tire/wheel. Your owner's manual will list the correct torque which will be around 80 lb/ft. Make sure anyone removing a wheel use a torque wrench and torque them correctly.

Steering whell shimmies when brakes are applied

A common problem with brakes are the rotors warping, which causes a vibration when applying the brake pedal. The brake pads, clamp down on the brake rotor, which slows the vehicle, and in the process, both items are subjected to very high temperatures. This is what causes the rotors to warp, which in turn creates the vibration you feel.Best solution is to replace the rotors and pads, with new.The calipers, which hold the brake pads, should be checked by the technician to make sure the piston is working properly, and not leaking. The rubber hoses should also be checked,no cracks or leaks, etc.Good luck.
