A friend recently replaced my Drivers side CV axle on my 95 Geo Metro, manual trans, 3 cyl, 1.0L. During the process he somehow tore the output axle seal and it started leaking tranny fluid all over the place. $183.00 later I had that problem fixed but now they told me the boot on the passenger side is torn. I got another axle but how do we safely remove and install the new one without tearing that output axle seal? Where is the output axle seal and is there a tool that will make removal of the halfshaft easier so we don't tear anything up it was really difficult to remove?
The axle should be able to be removed by using a flat ended pry bar tool with a dull flat end. Or possibly a very large flat screw driver. Put the pry bar between the axle and transmission. With light pressure, the axle should pop out of the transmission. The axle just snaps into the transmission. There should be no need or cause to damage the seal because the seal is inset into the transmission. Just watch what you are doing. As far as replacing the seal, I do not know. I have not had to do that yet, and I have replaced both sides with new boots more than once.
