Car: 2000 Lincoln Town Car Signature with 120,000 miles. When accelerating or running at high speed under load (i.e. up an incline), the car will hesitate. Then the "Check Trac" light comes on, the temperature gauge fails and, some times, the car will stall out. After turning off the car and restarting, the car starts up again with no warning lights and the temperature gauge working--until it happens again. I've seen other threads on this exact problem elsewhere. Some solutions are replacing the #4 coil on plug, which gets fouled by moisture from a leaking heater hose, or replacing the crank position sensor. Before spending the time and money on those repairs, I would appreciate hearing any other insights. Thanks!
I have been checking every post about this problem and have replaced many parts and the problem continued but today i backed my 1999 town car up on the ramps and found my gremlin. I had a bundle of 3 wires coming out of my fuel sending unit and taking a rest on the nearby exhaust bend and were melted together and showing bare wire so i pulled them away from the exhaust and separated the 3 wires in question and taped them and made sure they would not be keeping company with the hot pipe any more and then took a long drive and all is well again.

MAKE SURE TIRES ARE ALL THE SAME SIZE FIRST OF ALL,NEXT MAY HAVE A SPEED SENSOR NOT OPERATING PROPERLY OR BENT OR MISSING EXCITER RING ON FRONT HUB OR REAR AXLE. EITHER WAY THERE IS AN ABS FAULT OR A DIFFERENCE IN WHEELSPEED ON ONE OF THE FOUR WHEELS CAUSING TRAC LIGHT TO ILLUM. VEHICLE THINKS YOU ARE LOSING TRACTION AND APPLYING ABS AND MISFIRING VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN UNTIL TRACTION IS RECOVERED

I had the same problem with a 2004 LS. I took it to the dealer and turned out that 6 ignition coils were out and was factory defect. Ford extended the warranty for the ignition coil. All work and parts "no charge" this service was done about a month ago
SOURCE: 98 lincoln town car flashers, turn signals, brake lights don't work
check the outputs on the multi function switch (t/s switch) the brake lights and flashers all go threw this switch try to wiggle the flasher button if the lights start to work then the switch is bad to replace switch remove bottom cover by pedals if it has one bottom cover on steering colum has i beleave 4 screws that hold it on, the tilt colum lever unthreads and the cover will come off the upper colum just clips on you will have to remove the key tumbler to get it off . you need to disconnect the battery at this point and block the wheels. to get tumbler out put key in and turn to run postion there is a small silver button that pushes in with small screwdriver once its pushed in use the key to pull tumbler out the top cover will now come off you will probably have to tilt colum down and shift to 1 to get cover off there are 2 torx head screws that hold switch on plug new switch in and reconnect battery to test lights unhook battery again and reassemble please let me know how you make out

Have Autozone scan your car again since you replaced the parts. There are several things it can be.
Since the coils were bad it could cause carbon to form in the EGR passages. This confuses the computer and puts the car into "limp home mode". You may have to take the air filter housing and "airhorn" off and clean the passages under the airhorn gasket.
Replace the gasket, there are usually 8 bolts holding the airhorn to the motor, and scrape out the carbon and clean with gumout.
Another part, the TPS is on the airhorn and regulates the throttle, spark advance and gas.
This part usually sets a trouble code.
Let us know if you were successful.
