Hi anybody had problems with the ford focus speedometer ,I have just bought a 40000 mile 1.4 focus 2001 model and when I was driving the speedo stopped working ,when I stopped the car and turned the engine off then on again the speedo was ok but this happened again today .any idea's as to what the cause is or solutions would be helpful
Hi just had a chat with the local Ford dealer and apparently fors has agreed to replace the faulty instrument cluster for a flat fee of £95.00 but it is a one off and if the problem is not fixed then it must be the sender unit from the gearbox which you would have to get replaced which he said would cost approx £285.00 .
A speedo problem, take dash out ,spray it with wd40 and it will last a bit longer, but you will end up having a new one,if its still under warranty take it back

Have the road wheels or tyres been changed from the original manufacturer's specification? If they have been changed for larger (or smaller) diameter wheels this would necessarily alter the vehicle's speedo veracity! This seems the most likely cause of errors in speedo readings. If this is NOT the case, then it sounds like a speedo fault. Best of luck!
hi,i have a similar problem on my ford focus 2001...ill be driving along and the speedo will drop to zero and the battery light will come on.Just had a new alternator as last one was overcharging would the speed sensor cause the battery light to come on? if so ill get the sensor replaced but dont want to if this is not the problem
hi this is a common fault on the focus its usally a faulty speedo sensor that is fitted in the gearbox
if you open the bonnet and look bettween the engine and gearbox and towards the firewall/bulkhead
you will see the speedo sensor held in with a small steel roll pin remove the roll pin and pull the sensor out and dissconnect the wires to it and peplace it with a new sensor ,a healthy dose of wd40 penetrating spray will help to get the sensor out
Could be the sensor in the transmission (which detects the speed based on ratios) not sending the correct information, the computer malfunctioning or the instrument cluster itself. You'll need to take your vehicle by a shop that has a Fault Code reader to find out if there are any fault codes which would better indicate what the exact problem is. If you have an Advance Auto Parts store nearby, they'll do this free of charge.
Tune Time.
1)new spark plugs properly gapped.
2)new air filter (check every 35000 miles)
3)new fuel filter (every 35000 miles)
4)1 bottle of STP fuel treatment (red bottle) 4x a year.
5) oil and filter change (castrol or another good quality oil every 3-4000 miles.
6)proper air pressure in tires (check every 2 months
7) service transmission every 40000 miles or less.
New oil and filter
8) new plug wires every 80000 miles.
Your piece on a similar problem with a speed sensor on the gearbox of a Ford Focus solved te problem. The AA did not have a replacement sensor but advised, you could check your speed using a sat nav.
The dealer who supplied the car, Thrapston Ford, have agreed to supply & fit the part free of charge.
This is caused by the little circuit board that runs the speedo or a Vehicle Speed Sensor problem, have any Kragen auto or Auto Zone run a trouble code test to see if a VSS trouble code is present in the memory, if nothing shows replace the speedometer or have it repaired, if there is a code for the VSS replace the sensor on the transmission.
Same problem with me.
