1998 suzuk sidekick automatic transmission does not shift up when you first start out. Once it warms up, seems to work fine. Why and how do I fix it?

The transmission was supposedly rebuilt (wondering) and has been doing it before and after the rebuild. The transmission guys say they can't figure it out.

1998 but is it a 3speed or 4 speed.?
apples and oranges different.
3spe is pure hydramatii + 1 TC lockup wire. 3L30 box
4sp is electronically shifted, via a TCM brain inside the PCM. the A44 based trans, (common)

one easy fix (or 2)
are levels right, don't guess RTM read the manual.?
if the filter is clogged, cold AFT may not pass through it.
so maybe now the 50k miles service (full) in the transmission , might fix it. why wait?
dont read 10,000 posts for all 10,000 trans failures possible
why not read the FSM, and read the chapter called,
on car checks.

yah think? (IMO !!!)

    2wd or 4wd, what 3speed or 4 speed??????

the 3speed, can fail in some simple ways.
why not post which transmission is there.
the 4door usually has 4 speeds.
and the 4 speed has TCM limp home modes.
    unlike any 3speed made.
the 3 speed love to fail the vacuum modulator and loves to fail the kick down cable. but that causes late shifts, the modulator has 2 fail modes, leaks vacuum
or leaks inside causing late shifts or none. the last part in the 3 speed that fails. is the governor.
the GOV, has screens too. and they clog on all non serviced 3speeds.
on the 2wd is easy fix. and 4wd hard.
tell more, get more, i have vast data on sidekicks/trackers. and samurai

SOURCE: THE PROBLEM IS WHEN THE CAR IS COLD YOU CAN'T GET

try a full flush and filter.
hot ATF fluild flows more easy thru clogged filter.
or bad vac modulator or governor or its tiny filters.

you need a AT expert , if the flush dont work.
there are many on car tests.

Sounds like the trans could use a service, it might be too late to save it and will need a rebuild, but your description sounds like low pump pressure.

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

1998 malibu won't shift into gear when cold outside but, works fine in warm weather, why?

you need a transmission fluid and filter changed.because if filter stopped up.transmission fluid little thicker in cold climate make it hard circulate through filter.when engine and fluid get warmer fluid get thinner where it can circulate through filter cause transmission to shift correctly.

the first place i would start is the throttle position sensor ( TPS ), it will cause all kinds of transmission problems as well as drivability problems too. good day !

The lockup switch locks the converter when driving at highway speeds. You can try replacing it, as an attempt at a cheap fix, but it sounds like your transmission is getting weak. There are different clutches and bands in your transmission for different gears, which do wear out over time.

'98 subaru wont shift from 1st unless rpms are high- morning only

When you first start driving it usually takes atleast 4 miles to warm the transmission to operating temperature. The temp of the motor may say it is warmed up, But, the trans fluid and differential fluid only begins to warm as you drive and the parts are actually working. THe computer has sensors that keep the trans from shifting to OD until the temp is up as not to add stress to the motor until warmed properly. Hope this helps and have a good day.

Slow shifting when engine is cold

I have the same problem with my 97.... especially shifting from 3rd to O/D... I've had the tranny serviced and flushed.... It still does it until the tranny warms up.... the tranny's in them are temperature picky!!!!! It's the nature of the beast!!! Wait until spring and everything will be good until next winter!!! If you're really concerned with it you can put a "cold front" on it or block half (NO MORE THAN HALF) of the tranny cooler with cardboard thru the winter months

98 dodge avenger transmission problem

codes will verify if it needs to be pulled out. More than likely it will as the electronics are rarely the problem. The computer senses a indifference in the ratio between the sensors so it locks it in limp mode - 2nd gear.
