The clicking you hear is the vehicle asking for the program sequence to reprogram the locking system. Apparently something threw it out of sequence, ( a battery change , jumpstart, voltage spike , etc). The programming sequence that mazda uses is really kinda crazy. I was able to locate the sequence to try. If it does not work have the dealership flash the pcm, (another word for reprogram the powertrain control module). Here is the sequence:
1) Get in MPV with ignition key, and all fobs for the vehicle.
2) Close all doors and remove ignition key if it is in ignition.
3) Open driver's door
Note: Steps 4 and 5 must be completed in under thirty seconds.
4) Repeat the following three times
a) Insert ignition key
b)Turn ignition switch to on and then to lock
c) Remove ignition key
5) Repeat the following three times
a) Close driver's door
b) Open driver's door
Locks should all lock and then unlock within a couple of seconds--you'll hear the clicking sound
6) Press any button two times within five seconds on fob being programmed.
Locks should again lock and unlock
7) Repeat step 6 for all other fobs being programmed. When done with last fob, wait a few seconds and then you should be done with the reprogramming. Each fob should now work for this vehicle.
If they lock after you start to drive forward...and automatically unlock when you stop and place gear shift in park...that is a safety design...Many car builders use this, with certain variables as to when to auto lock, and auto unlock...if the locks are working on there own after you have started driving...that is another problem. Your owners manual should address how the locks in your Mazda 6 are designed to work. Hope this helps.
Does the remote do anything at all? Lock/unlock doors etc.? If not it's likely that the remote needs to be reprogrammed (can be done easily with online instructions) or the obvious: the battery is dead.
Step 2: Lock and unlock the drivers door using the power door lock switch on the door.
Step 3: Insert key into the ignition.
Step 4: Turn key to on position and return to off position. (IMPORTANT
- use ON position NOT ACC position). Do this 3 times within 10 seconds.
Leave key in the ignition.
Step 5: Open and close the drivers door 3 times. (Door should be left open after this step).
Step 6: ECU should respond by locking and unlocking the doors.
Step 7: Press any button on remote #1. ECU responds by locking and unlocking the car doors.
Step 8: Press any button on remote #2 (etc.) Each time the ECU will respond by locking & unlocking the doors.
Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition and the ECU will respond a
final time with a series of door locks and unlocks. You're done
