Sounds like a bad head gasket. You should be able to look at your sparkplugs and at least determine which bank of cylinders this problem is coming from. Then you only need to pull off 1 head.

Now there are many new chemicals which plug leaks, and some work and some do not. For a head gasket you need something to handle a higher pressure than is found in the Radiator. The correct repair is replacement of the head gasket and/or Magnaflux the head for cracks.

Stuff like Barrs leakstop is not as effective as some modern chemicals are for what you have as a problem. Expect to pay $12 to $18 for a modern chemical and follow the instructions. I am thinking about 1 chemical I have seen which requires you to drain the Radiator and flushing the cooling system AFTER the chemical is added.

You have an older, easier to work on truck. Be sure to check the compression after you inspect the plugs. You may want to have a Valve job on that bank while you have the head off.

Why would oil be in my coolant?

Oil in coolant, white smoke at start up = blown head gasket or cracked cylinder.

White smoke is water vapor from coolant. Only at startup indicates a small (extremely small) leak -- it will get bigger. Only at startup is because as engine cools it sucks water into cylinder. A compression check will tell you which cylinder is the problem (could be multiple)

You need to smell the white smoke. If it is still burning coolant, the smoke will smell sweet and it will dissapate fairly quickly. if it stays like a cloud and doesn't have a sweet smell then it is most likley oil. When you changed the head gaskets did you check the heads for flatness? When you say it's not losing any coolant, how are you checking? do you take the cap off the radiator or do you look at the overflow tank? It doesn't take much coolant leaking into the cylinders to make white smoke. I would do a pressure test of the cooling system.

Sounds like you blown a head and water is getting into your engine. Take it to your mechanic unless you can replace a head. If the water is not going into your oil it is burning out your exaust side of the head and thats why your getting the white smoke going out your exaust

Looks like you have a blown head-gasket. The white smoke is actually your engine coolant mixing with your engine oil and being expelled as a water vapor. You need to take it into a repair shop Immediately.

Well, this definitely sounds like you have a blown head gasket, and maybe a busted heater core (water vapor out of air vents). Both were probably caused by the car overheating creating a lot of pressure in the cooling system and blowing the head gasket(s) and maybe the heater core. The vapor out of the vents could also be caused by external coolant leakage of the head gasket on the hot engine bringing the vapor inside the cab via the heater fan...

I'd get that checked before any major engine damage happens...

Yesterday I purchased a 97 Toyota Camry and when we test drove the car it ran smooth and had no problems. after we purchased the car we put gas and started to drive home about half way home when I stoped...

If your test drive was short, but your drive home is longer, it could be a coolant leak. Coolant creates a thick white smoke when it burns. If it's coming out of the tailpipe, then it must be coming through the engine at some point, possibly from a failing head gasket.

A fairly inexpensive test for this is to drain and flush the radiator, refilling it with water, running the engine to warm it up, then drain and flush again, refilling it with water. Be sure to drain and flush the overflow reservoir as well if you can. And please be careful working with a hot radiator - steam burns skin very easily. This should remove at least 75% of the ethyl glycol antifreeze that causes the smoke.

Now, when you run the car up to temperature, if it still smokes white, but much, much less, then it is in fact coolant leaking into the engine and being vaporized and pushed out through the exhaust. The most likely point of failure is the head gasket - which means a several hundred dollar fix.
