hey my local toyota dealer said about $2000 to get it all new from them..abit much i think

You need the keys, the transponder amplifier (behind the ignition), and the ECU. If everything is hooked up right, it should start. If not, you may have a bad amp or ECU.

There is a new program for customers who have lost their transponder keys; Toyota will replace your ECU, for free, if you purchase the keys and the amplifier.

Unless you were given the keys to the vehicle that the parts came out of, you will not be able to get the car to start. The transponder key, the ECU, the ignition barrel and the transponder recognition unit all need to match.

Question: Where did you obtain the ignition barrel and the computer?

This is critical for me to sort out your issue.

I also think that I may have a very good solution. Please comment back.

Sure, I would sell you the same parts, IF I was interested in robbing you, BUT, I have no interest in having dissatisfied customers...So, here is what I need you to do: Call this number: 1-877-517-LOCK
This is my local locksmith, and he is cool...Tell them that I gave you this number. He has a machine, on his truck, that will reprogram your key to match the ECU/barrel combo in your car. Now, I do not expect you to have him come to your location, but, he may give you the info that HE has, his machine, and then you could call local locksmiths to see if they have the same gizmo that he has, to solve your problem. Secondly, there is an ECU exchange program from Toyota, that your dealer ssomehow neglected to tell you about, but it would cost you about 700.00 to get you going. Call the locksmiths first, and get back to me if my guy won't help you. This is the best that I can do, up to this point. Hope this helps. Advise of what transpires.

common problem the lock wears out and wont turn a replacement lock at auto parts store is about 100.00 dollars problem is if you have a transponder key the new lock comes with a plain key so when you change it the car wont start the way around this is what i did 2 months ago to my own car 1998 camry ( same car ) you need to take the bottom cover of the dash under the steering column off there is a little hole in the steering column under the key lock its a button up there your supposed to push when the key is in the on position but the problem is it wont turn so you have to drill it out its a hardned pin to prevent theft use a cobalt drill bit i think its 3/16 or close to it before you do this disconnect battery remove the little box from key lock under dash it has small phillips screws and the electrical ignition switch from the back of the ignition lock than drill till you can pop out the ignition lock you have to pop off the cover around the lock it has the green coil light in it when you turn on the key it lights thats the transponder coil for the computer now turn the key in the new lock on and slide it in reassemble everything connect battery turn key make sure it cranks but it you have anti theft key it wont start cut your old key apart carefully and take out the transponder chip cut a hole in the new key to glue in the chip and car will start now if you have transponder key you are looking at about 600.00 from dealer if you have a standard key its about 400.00 hope this helps

My 2004 Toyota Avalon XLS will not start. The

The first thing to do is try another key. Perhaps your transponder key has failed.
You can identify a 'transponder key'; it has a wide part wher you turn it.
