If you look at the spring tensioner on the belt, there is a 3/8 square hole in the support arm.
Use a ratchet wrench, or breaker bar in the hole, and release the tension. Once it's loose, you can remove the belt.

How to replace water pump bypass hose on a 1997 cherokee v8

To be able to replace the bybass hose on the water pump, you must first make room to gain access to the hose clamps that attach to the water pump. To make room you must first remove the fan clutch, fan and fan shroud all of them simultaneously.
To do that, start by loosening the tensioner roller with a rathcet and removing the serpentine belt. Then loosen the fan cluthc nut using a 32 mm spaner and loosen the bolts of the fan shroud. Then pull the three things upwards (fan shroud, fan, and fan clutch).

Location of the waterpump?

Looking at belt routing below, the water pump is the pulley all the way to the right, will have 4 10mm bolt's holding the water pump pulley, loosen 4 small bolt's on water pump pulley, remove serpentine belt, remove small water pump pulley bolt's all the way off, remove pulley, now you can see water pump, remove small 8mm bolt's from water pump, now water pump will come right off, hope this was very helpful.

I need to remove the water pump on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. What is neccesary to remove the front timing chain cover? I have the instructions to remove the water pump, but it involves removing the front...

Just to clarify i asked what size motor was in his car. The reason for that statement that removing the timing cover ,chain and exhaust wasent required to change the water pump is that on 3.4 V6 engines none of that is required. To change the water pump in my car ( 99 grand am gt 3.4L) all you need to do is remove serpentine belt, remove the 4 bolts holding on the water pump pulley, then remove the 5 water pump retaining bolts and it out. Then you just need t remove any traces of the old gasket clean the surface put a new gasket on following it with the new water pump torque the 5 retaining bolts , water pump pulley torque its 4 bolts put the serpentine belt back on fill and bleed the coolant system and your done. All the work done easily from the top of the motor without any special tools. It took me a hour and a half. So there is a huge difference in changing water pumps on a 4 cylinder engine and a 6 cylinder engine this is why I asked what engine he had in his car.

How do i change a water pump in a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

Hope the following will help.
1) Drain the radiator.
2) Loosen the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley. You will remove the pulley and install it on the new pump. Just loosen the bolts 1/4" turn with the belt still on, this will prevent the pulley from turning.
3) Remove serpentine belt.
4) Remove 4 bolts and the pulley and set aside.
5) Remove two power steering pump bolts (15mm). You must do this because one of the bolts for the water pump is behind the PS pulley, and you cant remove it without moving the PS pump out of the way. The bolts on the PS pump are in the 12 oclock and 6 oclock position. There is a large access hole in the PS pump pulley. Just line it up, slip in a long socket and remove them. Let the PS pump rest on the oil filter housing.
6) Remove water pump. There are 4 large bolts (15mm) and 4 small bolts (3/8") on the water pump. After the bolts are all out, I placed a length of pipe on the water pump and gave it a couple taps with a hammer and it popped right off.
7) Remove old gasket. The tool of choice IMO is a razor blade like youd use to remove a winshield inspection sticker. Be careful not to score the mating surface. Remove old gasket and dry off surface.
8) Seat the new gasket and water pump in place, install all the bolts.
9) Reinstall the PS pump and torque bolts.
10) Install pulley on water pump and torque.
11) Install serpentine belt.
12) Re-torque bolts on water pump pulley if needed.
