1997 Jeep grand Cherokee limited 5.2l v8....how to fix very stiff steering. I have changed the power steering pump already an it is still hard to turn my wheels

  • Jonah Oneal Jan 26, 2012

if power steering fluid low need add more wait until cool down add fluid to the full cold mark let engine idle few minutes turn off engine.remove power steering cap if fluid low add more to full cold mark dont over fill.you need to raise front of vechicle support vechicle on jack stands with the wheel pointing staight ahead, make sure vechicle sitting on solid level ground.check fluid again.then start engine then turn steering wheel left and right dont stop turn steering wheel left and right quick stop do this several times then.turn wheels straight ahead let vechicle sit few minutes check the power steering level.if fluid level stop dropping and turning steering wheel feel normal all the air is out the system.you can lower vechicle down to ground check make sure power steering feel normal and you have no leaks before taking vechicle back on the highway.

Sound like lack of lubrication at the steering joints, your ball joints need greasing and make sure you bleed power steering system, check power steering fluid level.if low more like power steering system full of air need bleeding.

My pulley busted into pieces on my 1997 jeep grand Cherokee 4wd v8. It is the PS pulley. is this an easy job and why would something like this happen?

The part is not that expensive. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_years/jeep-cherokee-power-steering-pump-pulley-1997.html
The thing is those pulleys don't come attached to the pump. They are separate and have to be installed and removed with a puller. I would suggest that you look on youtube for video and see what you can find. Also those don't just break, it may be something that was done when your friend worked on it or the pump is going bad.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited steering wheel is stiff and car is overheating

stopped in drive, engine shook is gross missing.
the belt snapped on front of engine, causing PS assist to end.
time for a new belt.
they last about 50,000 miles, best is to keep eye on belts.
or can be a long walk home.
or very expensive tow job.
the bent runs many important things, do not run the engine like this.

Why is my 93 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2 v8 whining?

Did you check all the fluids? Power steering can whine when fluid levels get low. I would think of things that are driven by the engine: power steering pump (check the power steering fluid), AC compressor, water pump, and so on.

Check out the belt tensioner; make sure it's not too tight, and that the pulley is properly lubricated. If that doesn't fix it, ask your mechanic about timing belt issues (fairly soon).

Hope helps.

97 Jeep grand cherokee with stiff steering at 9:00 and 3:00...

Check and see if the Power Steering Pump is Low on Fluid. If not Low, you could have a Leak in the Pump or Lines and will need to be Replaced. Also Make sure that the Belt is good and Tight. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

I have a jeep grand cherokee and the power steering keeps going stiff is it the power steering pump or steering box

If it only goes stiff part of the time, the box is probably OK.

Before considering major surgery:
  • check the power steering fluid level.
  • condition of the fluid
  • condition and tension on the belts
  • check for low or uneven tire pressure
  • check steering linkages for damage (did someone borrow the car recently?)
If none of these check out, then consider replacing the pump.
