Where are the shifting sensors located on tranny?

A/t box.
3speed or 4, they offered both in 1996.
my guess is the 4speed, which is electronically shifted
the car has TCM, if you unplug it (under dash) the Tranny swithes
to a manual trans, and you can shift it manually

what to do?
check all fuses first.
reseat the TCM, look for damage in side it.
check fluid levels , read operators guide, never guess, or overfill it.
RTM; read the guide then act.
make sure shifter actually moves tanny lever to DRIVE.
bad cable, or is loose or damaged.

does tranny shift to 2nd gear from 1st if starting off in 2nd?

There's a module on side of tranny get repair manual and it will tell u were at but sends signal to tranny to shift they go bad and need replaced easy fix

Speed output sensor. Located on the tailend of the tranny. Replaced mine did wonders. Make sure you have the right sensor for your trans. May need to get the dealer to lookup your vin#.

i pretty sure its parts of solenoid pak inside tranny need to drop tranny pan to remove and replace.

This is likely your electronic speed sensor. On my 2003 F150 it would rev quite high before finally shifting into 2nd. and my O.D light would blink also. The speed sensor is located under the vehicle about halfway back on the frame on the passenger side. The part costs about $70 and is a fairly easy repair.

there inside the tranny you have to remove the pan to see them but thats not going to be your problem go buy a can of TRANSX first!! and try that if that helps then you need to plan on rebuilding your tranny or replacing it

You need to get a hold of your local Chevy dealer. There was a bullitin on slide shifting on these years. There is a wire that has to be jumped on the computer to solve this problem. Hopefully it hasn't already ruined the transmission

I have a 2000, there is a speed sensor located in top of the rear axel and I believe another on the tranny housing. Try the rear axel first.

There is no OverDrive gear in the transmission. The fourth speed is achieved by locking up the torque converter while in third gear creating a input shaft to output shaft ratio of more than 1 (the infamous over drive). If you do not feel it shifting three times while accelerating up to 45 mph then there is probably a situation with the torque converter.
