I have the same problem. I think that it stems from the fact that Ford, Lincoln and Mercury are piles of ****. The best part of the probelm is that the interior lights always stay on.

Had the same problem with my 95 lincoln continental. Disconnecting the battery over night helped the first time - but when the temperature outside raised again, the problem reappeared. Therefore I sprayed all four latches with WD-40 and: Problem solved!
    Thanks!

It is a sticky sensor in the door latch mechanism. Spray it w/ WD-40 and follow up with a dose of silicone spray. Open/close doors several times and it should be ok. If you have a problem with 1 door the other 3 are sure to follow---DO THIS TO ALL 4 DOORS!!!!!!!!!

I spray contact cleaner right into the latch and the problem goes away instantly. . 3 - three second blasts will do it.

it is not the drivers door because you would get a "drivers door ajar" specific message. so that leaves 3 to try. mine are always one of the rear doors. never the passenger for some reason. this is a very minor annoyance if you have a can in your trunk ready all the time

I had the same problem on my 98 continental. First the DOOR AJAR came on then the DRIVERS DOOR AJAR came on. A dear friend of mine told me about the W/D 40 trick. So I tried it. I srayed all 4 doors with W/D 40 and low and behold all the lights went off and I can now access all of my controls. Lets hope for the best. Thanks Nanc

The WD 40 solution worked for me instantly. I just washed my car to get 2 weeks worth of salt off and when I parked it in the garage, the interior lights would not go out because of the "driver door ajar" message. I slammed the door 50 times and disconnected and reconnected the battery and still had the problem. When I sprayed the latch, the problem was instantly solved. This car is in perfect condition with low miles and no deterioration at all. (95 Lincoln Continental)

There is a switch located in the drivers and passengers door jamb that indicates to the car that your door is open. Either the switch is broken or the wire leading to it is unhooked or broken.

I have the same problem in 1998 continental. This thing is worse than a YUGO., it has problems constantly. It is my first and last ford product, back to GM.

I had this same problem. I believe it is the main computer not the door latch. I disconnected the neg. battery lead and computer reset itself. problem gone.

2002 lincoln towncar door ajar light s stay on after minor accident. Only goes off when in drive. Can't find the fuse. I have to disconnect the battery

You have one or more door ajar sensor switches that are defective, have the BCM (Body control module) scanned to see which door is causing it, the light can be turned on by any of the 4 doors. The sensor is located inside the door on the door latch mechanism, there is no fuse as it is a ground circuit.

97 lincoln town car door ajar stays on and reading lights wont go out when driving what can i do all doors are shut

unhook your battery for 5 mins then hook it back up go to each door and open and close one at a time that way you know which door is having the problem once you find that out replace the door switch and problem fixed or just dont open that door.

My power mirrors and door locks on the drivers side stopped working. The door ajar icon is lit. Could is be a fuse? Where are they located?

If the door contact switch is broken or jammed, the ajar indicator will stay lit. This will also prevent the door locks from locking as a safety precaution to make sure you don't accidentally lock yourself out of the vehicle. Check the door contact switch first.

I bought a used 99 Continental. The alarm was going off intermittantly so I disconnected the battery. I can't unlock the doors with the door key (not using the FOB). Is this a security feature that...

I had that problem as well. You are on the right track. You may also be having an issue with the dome light staying on after the car was shut off (fortunately they will only stay on for 10 minutes). The message center might also say that a door was ajar. For me it turned out to be the passenger front door switch in the latch mechanism. I saturated the mechanism with WD40 while it was still in the door (I was too lazy to remove it) and have not had any problems with it since (10 months and counting). As a note; the message center does not distinguish between the three passenger doors but it does between the passenger doors and the drivers door.

97 lincoln continental says door is ajar.

the door switches are part of the door latch, the easiest way to remedy this is to spray liberal amounts of WD40 into each latch and open and close the each door a few times, this should loosen up the latch and solve your problem.

Hope this helps.

1998 Lincoln Cont., Drivers Door ajar light will not go off

this sounds stupid, but i had the same problem with my mk8. and it fixed it. open the door and look at the door lockimg latch on the door frame. pull on the door handle numerous times as you spray some silicone lubricant in and around all the mechanism. This will free up the pin switch that is activated by a cam on the door latching mechanism. I fixed mine 6 months ago and have had no problems since.
