It is a sticky sensor in the door latch mechanism. Spray it w/ WD-40 and follow up with a dose of silicone spray. Open/close doors several times and it should be ok. If you have a problem with 1 door the other 3 are sure to follow---DO THIS TO ALL 4 DOORS!!!!!!!!!
I spray contact cleaner right into the latch and the problem goes away instantly. . 3 - three second blasts will do it.
it is not the drivers door because you would get a "drivers door ajar" specific message. so that leaves 3 to try. mine are always one of the rear doors. never the passenger for some reason. this is a very minor annoyance if you have a can in your trunk ready all the time
I had the same problem on my 98 continental. First the DOOR AJAR came on then the DRIVERS DOOR AJAR came on. A dear friend of mine told me about the W/D 40 trick. So I tried it. I srayed all 4 doors with W/D 40 and low and behold all the lights went off and I can now access all of my controls. Lets hope for the best. Thanks Nanc
After posting my problem, I found the following solution on Wikipedia. I tried it and it worked!
Common problem with these cars--Spray the internal latches liberally
with WD-40 or similar product operate door several times and then spray
with a silicone type spray--should solve your problem
The WD 40 solution worked for me instantly. I just washed my car to get 2 weeks worth of salt off and when I parked it in the garage, the interior lights would not go out because of the "driver door ajar" message. I slammed the door 50 times and disconnected and reconnected the battery and still had the problem. When I sprayed the latch, the problem was instantly solved. This car is in perfect condition with low miles and no deterioration at all. (95 Lincoln Continental)
The WD-40 trick worked great. The thing was driving me crazy with the interior lights coming on when vehicle stopped. Followed the above instructions and worked right away. Thanks all.
There is a switch located in the drivers and passengers door jamb that indicates to the car that your door is open. Either the switch is broken or the wire leading to it is unhooked or broken.

I had this same problem. I believe it is the main computer not the door latch. I disconnected the neg. battery lead and computer reset itself. problem gone.

I have the same problem. I think that it stems from the fact that Ford, Lincoln and Mercury are piles of ****. The best part of the probelm is that the interior lights always stay on.

Had the same problem with my 95 lincoln continental. Disconnecting the battery over night helped the first time - but when the temperature outside raised again, the problem reappeared. Therefore I sprayed all four latches with WD-40 and: Problem solved!

ive had the same problem.....try this.....open all the doors and with each door open pull the door handle back all the way and let it go a few times (the cable inside the door panel might not be fully retracting) and slam the door firmly......try this to each door and see if it works.....i had luck.....it was my passenger door that doesnt get used that much - Bair
