SOURCE: Heater core burned out and I want to bypass the coolant hoses.

Without knowing your car specifically I can suggest the generic way to do it. Locate the two heater hoses going into the firewall, probably on the passenger side. They're the ones that get hot and are about an inch + in diameter. Disconnect. Measure the inside diameter of the hose and purchase a short piece of galvanized or copper pipe (6 inches) at Home Depot. Connect both ends of the hoses to the pipe to form a loop. Secure the hoses so they don't land some place that would cause a problem.

I had this problem on an 85 Tbird. I had heard about a product called Bars Leak and tried it. It worked. No leaks and I kept my heater. You should be able to find it at any parts place at less than $10. Ground black pepper also has worked for me.

Turn on power to heater & nothing but the power light comes on, please help

There's a heater core box where radiator coolant passes through. When you turn on the heater, the fan on the heater core box blows air through the core, then the air is heated up and it passes through the air ducts, which leads to the windshield defroster, the vents, or your feet depending on where you set the control. If you're not feeling heat, either the fan on the heater core box is not working, or there's restriction on the coolant hoses and hot coolant isn't passing through the heater core box. Remove and diagnose the heater core box to ascertain the coolant lines are not blocked and the fan is fully operational. If the heater core box is OK, then the hoses have restriction to prevent hot coolant from passing through the heater core box.

HOW TO CHANGE HEATER CORE IN 2000 BUICK CENTURU

Instructions
  1. Removing the Heater Core
    • Lift the hood and prop it open. Makes sure the engine is cold. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench or box wrench. Avoid using open-end wrenches on the battery terminals, as they tend to strip the bolt heads.
    • 2Place a drain pan under the radiator. Open the radiator cap. Open the radiator drain on the bottom of the radiator and the two coolant drains near the oil pan. You can reuse the coolant unless it appears cloudy and contaminated. Close all three drain openings once all the coolant has drained from the system.
    • 3
    • Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses of the heater core inside the engine compartment using a socket wrench. Be prepared to catch or wipe up any coolant that drips from these hoses. Drain the coolant from inside the heater core.
    • 4Unscrew and remove the lower instrument panel sound insulator from below the dashboard on the passenger side. Use a socket or screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws on the heater flooricon1.png outlet. Remove the clips and take out the duct.
    • 5Loosen and remove the screws holding the heater core cover in place. Remove the cover.
    • 6Remove the retaining bolts holding the heater core in place. Remove the heater core.
    Installing the Heater Core
    • 7Position the replacement heater core and secure the retaining bolts. Put the cover back on the heater core and reattach the screws and clips.
    • 8Reinstall the floor outlet duct with its screws and clips, followed by the lower instrument panel sound insulator.
    • 9Reconnect the inlet and outlet hoses to the heater core In the engine compartment.
    Refilling the Cooling System
    • 10Tighten all of the drains. Fill the radiator up to the base of the radiator neck with antifreeze, reusing the old coolant if it's cleanicon1.png. Fill the coolant overflow tank up to the "FILL" mark.
    • 11Reconnect the negative cable on the battery and start the engine, making sure you leave the radiator cap off. With the engine idling, look into the radiator and notice that the coolant level has dropped. Add coolant until the level is back up to the base of the radiator neck. Add coolant to the "FILL" mark on the overflow tank. Put the radiator cap on, making sure the arrow on it points to the overflow tank.
    • 12Squeeze the large return hose leading to the top of the radiator with the engine still running. The hose should begin to feel hot, indicating that the thermostat has opened and is functioning properly.
    • 13Check for leaks in the cooling system.

My heater is not working what do i need to replace??

First check blower motor, possible go to bad or no power to it check fuses blower switch blower motor.

Try this procedure to remove this device...
1 Detach the negative and positive battery cables from the battery of your 2001 Jeep Cherokee with an open end wrench and crescent wrench.
2 Remove the cap from off the radiator and also from the top of the coolant overflow tank on the passenger side of the Jeep. Locate the drain valve at the base of the radiator and place a drain pan on the ground, below the drain valve.
3 Open the drain valve on the radiator with an open end wrench and allow the coolant to drain into the pan completely. When it is finished, close the drain valve and remove the drain pan.
4 Unfasten the dash pad on the top of the dashboard by using a screwdriver to undo the screws holding it in place. Check the defroster vent and remove any screws holding the vent screen in place.
5 Remove the trim panel underneath the passenger side of the dashboard with a screwdriver and set it aside. Locate the plastic box that is sitting underneath the dashboard on the passenger side.
6 Undo all the screws that are holding the plastic box in place with a screwdriver and set the box off to the side. Locate the heater core that was sitting inside the plastic box.
7 Unscrew all the screws that are holding the heater core to the firewall with clamps underneath the dashboard. Remove the clamps from the heater core.
8 Lay a piece of plastic sheeting on the passenger side floorboard to cover the carpet from any coolant remaining in the heater core. Pull the heater core away from the firewall until you see the hoses attached to the inlet and outlet pipes on the unit.
9 Remove the water hoses from the pipes on the heater core by unscrewing the hose clamps with a screwdriver and sliding the hoses off the pipes.
10 Take the old heater core out of the Jeep Cherokee and dispose of the unit. Recycle the drained coolant by taking the drain pan with the fluid to your local recycling center or automotive supply

Ihave a discovery 2 when the car is ticking over rev the engine i the sound of water gushing through the dashboard ca n any one help thanks phill

It is common for the sound of water to be heard "gushing" through the dash. There is something called a heater core which is nothing more than a small radiator that when hot water is allowed to flow through and you trun on the blower fan, you get heat inside the cab. Double check your coolant resevoir to make sure you have the proper amount of coolant. Let me know.

I have bought a 99 land rover discovery and it is overheating

From practical experiences of heavy trucks, this problem is created by poor coolant flow thro' the Radiator Core. Flush cleaning the Rad. or decontaminating the exterior air flowways will not cure the problem. My recommendation is a Recore or after market replacement.

The sound of water swishing about under the hood - sometimes the water actually comes through the side of the glove box. I think the water is not draining from the area below the windscreen - should this...

You can run your garden hose onto your windshield and see if it drains from both fenders (close to the doors). If the water isn't pooling under the wiper-blades then it is probably a clogged drain inside the blower box or air inside your heater-core (could be caused by a leak and-or low coolant.
