If it is allot of water you will need to pull the tank, if the water is muddy you will need to pull the tank. If it is just a little water you can pump it out by using the in tank electric fuel pump by jumping the fuel pump relay and powering up the pump all the time. If the water has been in the tank very long you may have much more serious problems with parts like injectors being ruined from water deposits and rust. In some cases you can absorb the water by adding a pint of denatured alcohol to the tank, it is available from any hardware store.

If you know water hasn't flooded into the tank and it is only a little bit (which still sinks to the bottom because water is heavier than oil or gas) you can add HEET available at almost any auto parts store. Add it to the gas. Water and oil don't mix but there is a special alcohol (and don't use rubbing alcohol, it is isopropyl, meaning it has already soaked up as much water that it can) in it that absorbs water and lets it combine with the gas so it can be burned.

Ordinary Denatured Alcohol works just fine, much cheaper

HOW DO I FIX THE CAR AFTER WATER WAS THROWN INTO THE FUEL TANK?

have to remove the gas/water in that is in the tank by removing the tank so you can turn it upside down and make sure every drop of the gas/water is out of the tank siphoning it out may leave some old gas/water in the bottom of tank then get rid of it let the tank dry out for a day and reattach it, then refill your tank with gas it may screw up for a little bit until the gas/water trapped in the fuel line is totally gone.

WHAT ARE SOURCES OF WATER IN GAS TANK?

Condensation from headspace air in the gas tank is one source of water in gas tank.
Also beware of contamination at the gas pumps. When I was young I filled my truck at a station when the fuel hauler was delivering gas. That must have stirred all the **** up in that tank, because I only got about ten miles till my fuel filter was plugged solid.

2005pontiac grand prix with water in the gas tank

Your best bet is to drop the tank and then dump out the water. Dropping the tank isn't that big of deal. Remove the filler hose and a couple vacuum hoses. Unplug the main fue pump harness. Remove the fuel lines. Support the tank with an appropriate jack. Remove the straps and drop the tank.

Water in gas tank

will need to completely drain tank, either remove tank from car or if has an external electric fuel pump you can disconnect fuel line between pump and engine, connect 12v battery to power supply of pump and pump gas out. make sure to run line to bucket to collect gas/water mix, remember water is heavier that gas so water will be on bottom of tank and first to pump out

1998 c1500 , code p300 , bad misfiring shortly after refueling , replaced plugs with no change , could it be bad gas ?? , also put in 3 bottles of injector cleaner that did not help

Probably water in the gas..., although its not common.. ... this problem should cure itself with your next tank of gas.. its not likely to be anything else..is your check engine light on?? have you refilled the tank with gas yet?
Injector cleaner is ok, however they make a gasline product for up north to evaporate water out of the gas tank because the water will create ice or slush in the tank in cold weather..
Methyl Cloride is what I used to use in Canada, in the winter to evaporate water out of the tank.
And maybe you have a lot of water in the tank.... when you take off the fuel filter, you will be able to see water beading up (a clear gasline hose which does not come with your car) will tell you all sorts of stories about water and how clean your gas is (on the gas tank side of your filter)...

Water in the gas tank

i would go up and get some HEAT they sell it at any auto store it treats up to 15 gallons of gas. HEAT takes the water and trapes it so that there isn't much water left into the tank and allowes the gas to run like it is supposed to..
