Yes this would cause the car to oveheat. DO NOT drive this car if it is overheating!! you will damage the engine very quickly.
Testimonial: "thanks but now im having a hard time keeping the tank full. it spills out wile the cars ideling. then when the thermastate opens i cant fill it up fast enough before it sucks more air in. any pointers?"
Have the cooling system pressure tested (requires a special tool) to determine where the coolant is leaking out from the engine.
im sure its not loosing coolant. i changed a few hoses that were qusetenable. air keeps bubeling into over flow tank. can this air stuck inside cause the heat to stop working and then also make the engine get hot?
You must bleed the air out of the cooling system on this model and engine. Here is how you do that.
The generic method of bleeding air from the cooling system is to use a floor jack and raise the front of the car as high as possible, then fill the coolant recovery tank full and run the engine until it just starts to overheat, high end of normal zone on gauge, then shut the engine down and run cold water over the radiator core, this will self bleed the system and the coolant will be pulled from the recovery tank, repeat as necessary, never let the recovery tank run dry or more air will be pulled into the system.
Remember do not overheat this engine!! I can't emphasize that to much on the caddy engines.

Run the engine until it is hot, not overheated, then shut it down and run cold water over the radiator, slowly open the cap and top of the coolant.
