I was told I have a leak in the rear main seal or the oil seperator needs to be replaced? What are the odds of one over the other and how can I tell on my own? The car has about 150,000 miles.
There is a good chance it is the rear main seal. If this is a turbo engine, the oil return line seal from the bottom of the turbo to the block leaks also. Shop should be able to clean everything off and spay some dust on the area. Drive the car a few days, and take another look. You really need a lift to get a good look.

We always have the manifolds surface ground at a machine shop when we do these. The manifold will warp form heat cycling and needs to be flat to seal. Take it to a machine shop and they will now what to do.
It sounds like the rear oil seal on the oil base pan is leaking......You have to remove the base pan and replace the front and rear oil seal.They just sit in the grouve of the oil pan.You can also try retorqueing the bolts first to see if they came loose over time. Hope this helps.
Hi, I have a 1996 Volvo wagon 850 turbo. I just bought it and when you hold the rpm's at 3 and a half it was blowing out smoke after about 600 miles it stoped smelling like burning oil and doesn't blow out any smoke. But I use a court of oil in about every 150 miles. What could this be?

A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.
The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.
Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.
Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.
do a compression test as oil out the dip stick is usualy cauused by blowby or blocked engine breather. PCV.compression test will also pick up any problem with the head.when you pull the spark plugs out make sure they are the same color.
