My 1997 buick lesabre shuts down while driving. I cannot get it started again at the time. If I leave it sit for an hour it will again start and run. I changed gas filter and it still happened. Took it to a garage and they cant find anything wrong with the car. I drove itagain and the same thing happens every day or every other day. Please Help.
It is very likely the part that is giving you the problem is a Crankshaft Position Sensor, they go open circuit when they get hot, then after it cools it becomes a good circuit again, this is very frustrating, had the same issue with my Buick a few years ago, replaced the coils and the ignition module at a cost of hundreds, DID NOT CHANGE A THING, the crank sensor fixed the problem and was $30.00 from Buick.
When driving 95 buick lasabre custom it shut off so i pull over and it cranks back up. about 10min driving or less it repeat it self. i have done oil change, tune up wire, plugs, air filter, fuel filter.
My 97 Lesabre shuts off while driving-it doesn't give a sound. It does not come back on immediatley. It first seems like it is the battery but the lights/radio/etc..stay on. Why would the car do that...I want to fix it but I don't know what to fix. Please help?
The cam/crank positioning sensor
Most the time its either the crank shaft sensor o r ignition module. When the car quits and doesnt start again, grab a volt meter, chace the wires to the crank shaft sensor ad hit it with the volt meter. Should be a groud a positive and a signal wire. If the signal wire doesnt read anything from 0-5 volts when cranked. The crank shaft sensor is shot. If it does read then its most likely the ignition module. To my knowledge not really any test to test it besides swapping in a new one
Replace your Crankshaft Position Sensor. Cost about 40 to 60.00 for part plus labor.
I just had the same problem and having it replace today.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like a throttle positioning sensor, or fuel regulator.
also
Sounds like bad coil(s). Once the coils cool they work then get hot and short .
thanks.
Camshaft Position Sensor. Not the crankshaft position sensor, where a no start condition would occur.
I have a 97 buick lesabre and it start to putt when im on the freeway doing about 65-70 what could that be i ned help

I have a 97 buick, high miles problem is similar to "car shuts down while driving" My buick does shut down but not consistently. It is more often in stop and traffic when engine is hot. I have to immediately shift to "neutral" turn ignition back on, keep my left foot on the brake and right foor slightly depressed on the accelerartor pedal. Do this all in the same motion. This is very scary esp. in traffic. When engine is cold and I use remote start it starts great and holds it own idle. After driving for a while and I shut down and start again, it CHUGS and tries to idle but quits.
where is the cranck pos. sensor located.
my 97 buick will run fine for a day or so it starts ok when cold but you drive it around for awhile and you go to start it it turns over but will not start for about 1 hour some one on here said that it could be crankshaft position but mine has 2 crankshaft position (cmp) and crankshaft position (ckp) so do you change both or is it one ore the other. thank you for help
i have a 97 buick lesabre when the voltage meter gets to the half way mark it shuts down then when i try and restart it the battery drains and i have to jump the car this happens every day and more then once a day what can it be please HELP
IM DRIVING AND MY 97 BUICK DIES OUT TURNS OFF AND I NEED TO WAIT TO TURN BACK ON
have 95' lasabre wont fire on 2 cylinders getting gas n, but no fire. new wires and plugs. help
Another solution given was that the 2nd gear switch in the transmission could be the problem and needs to be replaced. Does this seem likely?
I want to thank emmission wiz and ready2helpu for taking the time to answer. I am not a mechanic but will run your answers past my mechanic. I know that he has run multiple diagnostic tests and has worked with many possible solutions, none has worked 100%. I would say 65% solved but still have this problem just less frequent. Hopefully, I can now cure it 100% If you feel there might be something you missed please sent it in.
Thank You, DanB
