Stuck between 2wd and 4wd

I have a 2001 Sportage (AT) that seems to be stuck in between 2wd and 4wd. When driving at low speeds ( <40 mph.) it rattles like a 10 speed, and then you hear a clunk under the car. It only happens when you take your foot off of the gas and happens every time once you get to the lower speeds. HELP!!! Very frustrated!

SOURCE: 2002 kia spectra has hard time picking up speed

I had the same problem. I changed my fuel filter too.Your catalytic converter is clogged. I could put the pedal to the floor board and couldnt hardly pick up any speed. I could hardly make up a hill on the highway. Take it to a kia dealership and they will, they should replace it for free, they did mine and I didnt have a warranty. I think there is a warranty on that specific part. That's what it is though.

SOURCE: 00 KiA Sportage 4wd Locking Up on Turns

It sounds like your CV joints, on the outsides of the front axles, are binding up. You might end up having to replace them. A small piece of advise, drive about a mile or so once a month in 4WD, that will help prevent this from happening again.

2002 ford ranger - Where is the 4x4 actuator located

On the transfer case
Transfer Case - Electronic Shift
The four-wheel drive electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators: one for 4WD HIGH which appears as 4WD, and one for 4WD LOW, which appears as 4WD LOW. Shifts into 4WD HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4WD HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5 mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4WD LOW, the four-wheel drive (4WD) control module requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission be in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission).
The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the 4WD HIGH, 4WD LOW, and 2WD range positions.
The four-wheel drive (4WD) control module controls the gearmotor encoder assembly that shifts between 4WD HIGH, 4WD LOW, and 2WD modes.

4wd light keeps flashing on 2003 mitsubishi challenger

Hi Adstew,
the front diff has a sensor telling the control unit it when it is engaged (or not). It probably is, and it won't disengage. or the sensor is stuck. The selector lever tells the control unit you want 2WD but the sensor thinks the front axle is engaged. So it flashes.
When shifting to 2WD, normally the front axle will come free after a load change or a bit of turning the steering from side to side, but it sometimes happens that it gets stuck. You can find out:
lift the car free off ground, then select drive forward in 2WD. If the front wheels do not turn, then the sensor may be faulty or stuck. if the front wheels turn in 2WD mode, the diff is stuck and the sensor tells you so. Same or similar problem can happen with the center diff, by the way, on pajero/montero, etc.

Winfried, the perfessa

How do you shift to 4wd 99 wrangler

You can shift on the fly...as you are moving....into 4WD at speeds up to 40 MPH but simply grabing the 4WD selector and moving into the 4WD high gear. Low gear selection should be done at a stand still, with transmission in neutral position before proceeding in fwd. The low position is a "granny gear" that is for extreme situations where high 4WD will not suffice or get you out of a stuck situation.
