Hi I have a 2000 auto lancer and when it changes from 2nd to 3rd the change is very rough. But if I put my foot down it is not to bad. Can you please advise me what could be the problem
Make sure transmission hydraulic liquid is at level when engine is at operation temperature.
Check when engine at idle speed and car in horizontal place. It s important level not to be outside pointer marks.
The best way to check the automatic transmission fluid of a Lancer 03 is to drive the car for like 10 miles first, then stop the car, put it on neutral, then down to D, 1, 2, 3 then back to neutral, then R, P and down again to neutral then D, 1, 2, 3 then back to D only (not neutral), when it's on D turn the engive off and check the fluid level, it should be at the top mark of the hot level, try to check it like 4,5 or even 10 times to have an accurate mark.

Hi,
Depending on the version (country of manufacture/intended market region), it may either be:
You may want to have your mechanic inspect the kickdown cable if it has got one. This cable is from the throttle-body linkage to the transmission with an an adjuster at one end. Most Japanese cars have the adjuster at the transmission end. The freeplay, slack and backlash has to be adjusted just right. Normally there would be a spring at the end.
Alternately, if it is an electronically controlled transmission, the throttle-position sensor provides the shifting trigger. You may need to inspect that it is providing good signal to the computer.
Incidentally, common to both may be a vacuum modulator. As the name implies, it takes a sample of the vacuum condition from the manifold and uses that to control the shift characteristics. A leaky vacuum hose would result to poor shifting at low RPM/speed (since vacuum would be low). This might be more to your concern.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
Interesting fault, Neutral drive switch. Appreciate the update/information. Am sure others would benefit from this. Curious though that this was not detected when the "transmission serviced and reset". In any case am glad that your concern has been addressed and more importantly by you, congratulations.

I Have a lancer 2000 automatic and I have had the transmission seviced and reset. I was told that it wasn't a gearbox problem but a computer problem . I have had the car looked at by a machanic and he can't find the problem. Has any one else incountered this problem ?? It will only change roughly when driving slow from 2nd to 3rd gear in the automatic and is fairly smooth if I put my foot down.
Thank you. I will now investigate these solutions. I think that the Mechanic said that the throttle position was ok. Will keep you informed Thanks
Hi well after some fault finding and spending some $ I have found the problem myself. The Neutral drive switch was faulty and I removed it cleaned it and replaced it. All running great now
