Ljbbw, I have somewhat the same problem. I have a 95 ZJ and mine starts out in 2nd gear, OD light always on for the OFF selection, and whatnot. I found out from a local garage (waiting for a 2nd opinion) that 1st gear no longer exists on my transmission, I have to start in 2nd from a full stop or low speed roll, and then shift into 3rd/Drive, but no OverDrive, so at like 60 mph I hit 2700 rpm and it wont up or downshift. Its potential it COULD be the torque converter off as they thought it could have been my issue, but who knows, get it looked at before something really goes wrong?
You can retrieve the codes through the OBD dianostic connector with a scanner.

I took it to the transmission shop and they checked it out and I need a complet rebuild. Thanks for your input
Transmission goes into safe mode (will run in third gear only). This problem started after I had the trany rebuilt. Trany shop said it must be an electrical problem so I took it to my regular mechanic and he has replaced the TCM twice, and gone thru everything he can think of. He says there are no electrical problems outside the trany. Returned to trany shop and they replaced all electrical components inside the trany. I drove it home, 3 miles, and it ran execellent. Later that day we drove it 1.4 miles and it went into safe mode again. The TCU/SRS DIAG fuse (10 amp) keeps burning out. Everyone is extremely frustrated! Both shops are very reputable.
