2004 Stratus Steering Rack

Hi,in the past when doing jobs on cars to do with the steering rack ive always had to replace as parts are non repairable.
hope this was some help.

This sounds like a bad valve in the rack and pinon. I just had a simalar problem on a Mitsubishi .. I replaced the rack with a A1 Cardone rebuilt rack and it cured the problem.. Rebuilding a rack is a job better left to the pro rebuilders.. you can call the teck line for A1 cardone and ask them what they think.

the pump will make noise if it is going out & full of fluid it could be the rack but most likely the pump & less money to start with the pump

Could be that the pivot bearing on the top of one of the struts has packed up. It means taking the strut out and compressing the spring to get at it, not the easiest or safest job. Before doing this have a look at the ends of the steering rack and make sure that the steering arms enter and exit in the centre of each end. Sometimes if the steering action becomes laboured it can be as a result of the bearing at one end of the rack giving up and the associated steering arm begins to drag against the inside of the rack end. In this instance it might be possible to have a new bearing fitted rather than replace the whole rack.

possible a bad powersteering pump or a bad power steering rack.

sounds like powersteering pump,or rack and pinion,check fluid level

if you have a leak from the back of the rack your sector shaft seal is defective. to replace it you need to remove the rack and do it on the bench.remove the locking nut and pull the seal from inside.if you are a rooky replace the rack with a rebuild one. good luck.

Well it's one of three things:
1. The fluid has leaked out and you should check for leaks and check the fluid level.
2. If the level is fine your power steering pump could be bad.
3. If the level is fine your rack and pinion could be bad.
