Have a 2002 f150 2WD. Truck makes a clunking sound at low speed, cruising speed and high speed but not all the time. When I turn the truck to the left it sometimes makes a horrible grinding/squealing sound. Tires all have less than 7000 miles on them and are a good name brand. Suggestions?

Could be suspension, gearbox or drive train. I'll need more information.
Is it a single clunk or does it repeat. Does it change with speed?

SOURCE: Clunking from front end in 2WD

ASE mechanic here:
check the king pins in the front end and the u joints for any kind of play. sounds like front end play while four wheel drive is engaged and stills is affected for a while when two wheel drive is activated. this year truck most definitely has a manual four wheel linkage that could be the problem too. try lubing up any moving linkage and i would shift it in neutral. keep me posted

If it sounds like a rumble from back wheels it may be the rear end going out. Mine has been replaced twice with used rear end. You should be able to confirm it by looking at the rear tires both sides of tire for an oil leak or wet spot on tire or rim.

You can usually tell by grabbing the driveshaft & turning it by hand back & forth & push up & down, side to side looking for play in the joint.

SOURCE: I have a 2007 F150

Hello, It would not hurt to check and would cost you nothing to do so. The valving controlling the vacuum to the actuators could be giving you partial engagement. But if only on one side is doing it, I would think it would pull to the passenger side when in 2 wheel drive.

I had a client with a similar noise and on his truck the front driveshaft had a bad u-joint. Because the driveshaft is to your right, at the center of the truck; he also blamed the passengers wheel. You get a lot of sympathetic motion in the drivetrain. If you think about it, wear can occur on one side of the u-joint. When the shaft is being dragged along by sympathetic motion the driveshaft is being pulled, but when you hit 4x4, now the shaft is pushing and the pressure shifts to the opposite side of the u-joint. Under pressure the joint is now tight.

You may observe rust and grease "tracking" in the areas of the U-joint when you check the front driveshaft. I hope my solution is very helpful in solving your problem. Would appreciate a note when you find the cause of this problem.

When I turn in my 2002 Honda Odyssey, the steering wheel makes a "vibrating/rubbing" noise. What might be causing this? Thanks.

Does this happen at both high and low speeds? At high speeds I'd suggest that you have the wheel bearing checked. If it's at low speeds, check the wheelwell for parts that might be coming in contact with the tire. Drive VERY slowly and carefully have someone look at it.

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban. I have automatic four wheel drive but when I shift into four wheel high it makes clunking sound. I have not tried four wheel low. I wondered why I can still use auto four wheel...

the auto 4 wheel does the same as part time in jeeps, it engages only when the vehicle loses traction. when auto 4 wheel is on the truck isn't fully in 4 wheel drive. my 02 sierra makes the clunk noise too but it does engage. try checking your fluids, i know its way pass the time for me to change mine out.

When turning steering wheel - either way, clunking sound.

Sounds like you have a bad CV joint, this will make a clunking or clicking noise like you described only when turning, and varies with vehicle speed.

Have it repaired before it breaks and leaves you stranded, or damages anything else.

Trans clunking when slowing down

Sounds like youi may have a few serious problems going on to have that kind of back lash occuring at higher speeds. I have experiance with low spped clunks on Bronkos and your type of vech being a car dealer. One you might try for low speed clunk on take off and braking at stop likts just completeing a stop? Pull the drive shaft and lubricate the splin - two check your leaf springs for weakness and wore bushings - take a look at your shocks - three u bolts holding springs to rear axle housing may be letting the axle housing actually dip or tweak or all those thing in combination - now you may have some serious slop in the pig - transfer case may be causing that clunk - as far as high spped clunk and activity you have a serous problem and you just might drop the transferr case have an accident fliping over..............Mike South Bend Indiana don't just keep driving and making problem worst...........
