The Jetta in Question is a Turbo Diesel. It has sat for some time so I had the fuel pump and injectors rebuilt. I also changed the fuel filter. The problem seems that the engine will starve for fuel and shut off. It doesn't cut off right away, but acts as if the idle is turned back until the car just dies. If you wait for a few seconds, you can refire the car and drive a few hundred yards and the same thing. Could trash in the tank be blocking the fuel lines and causing a starvation problem?

Yes, they can be rebuilt. But you could find it pretty tough to find someone to rebuild just the R (reverse) depending on where you are. And unless all bad gears are replaced, it may not worth dismantling them in the first place.

Wont happen, when gasoline settles for a long period of time the petrols start to thicken and becomes like a varnish, the pump is siezed and needs to be replaced. even if you did get it to restart it would be very unreliable

SOURCE: Where can I find the wiring diagram for a 1985
There are several depending on what you are looking at. I have not found a good set via the internet unless you want to order a set or purchase a manual.
The best source is a manual. The best is Robert Bentley version or the Haynes. I got mine from the library. Go and ask and if they don't have one they will often be able to get one from another branch.
Sorry but if I scan and send a copy if violates the copyright for the manual.
It is best anyway to have a copy at hand and to see the full set of diagrams.
Hope this helps.
