1997 honda crv...need to change the turn signal switch...removed all the screws holding the one piece coverplate behind the steering wheel (where the switch resides) but it looks like it can't be removed...

dont remove the steering wheel as likely to interfere with the air bag, the turn signal switch may be connected to the wiper switch so have a good look around the two for any connection

    Chevy Cobalt turn signal issues

There is a plastic piece inside the steering column that will automatically turn the turn signals off when the steering wheel is turned back to 'straight ahead'. This plastic piece can break, and if it does, they can only be turned off manually, as you are doing. I have not worked on anything as new as your cobalt to repair this, but on older cars it involves removing the steering wheel and turn signal assembly. You must also deal with the air bag. Don't attempt this repair unless you have a manual to follow to disarm the air bag and properly remove the steering wheel and other components.

These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

CAUTION Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

CAUTION The abrasion sleeve must be installed back onto the steering column wire harness assembly. The ignition lock cylinder case wires and connector must be hanging out of the middle of the abrasion sleeve.

    1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
    2. Tighten the following to specification.
      • Top pan head tapping screw: 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).

CAUTION When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

It's unlikely the turn signal switch. Try disconnecting the switch mounted directly above the brake pedal. If the light turns off the problem is in the brake switch. They commonly go bad and can be picked up at a gm dealer for about $15.
