2002 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0 V6 Started with Low Beam Headlights inoperative. Replaced the Low Beams. Headlight Switch Position 1. Off (Nothing); 2. DRL (Nothing); 3: Running Light (Running Lights); 4. Headlight (Headlight Low Beam bulbs); 4a. Headight High Beam) (Headlight Low and High Beam bulbs) Checked 5AMP Fuse and replaced (not burned out). Swapped 3 relays around // DRL never illuminated. (Is it the Low or High Beam that should illuminate under the DRL Switch position?)
[Information] For a 2002 Toyota Camry, the Daytime
Running Lights (DRL) operate utilizing the High Beams (inner Lamps closer to
the center of the vehicle front) at a reduced power. [The troubleshooting process:] Review the Owner's Manual and ensure the test
configuration matches the following criteria: 2. Set the Test Conditions according to Step 1 above. 3. Check the headlight bulbs to ensure they are not
burned out. If one burns out, there is a fair chance that the other would have burned
out at the same time. Replace as necessary.
In this case, if the high beams operate, the DRLs should also operate. My problem was that the test configuration did not have
the engine running and parking brake off - Step 1. Problem solved with much
thought, repetitive tests on the vehicle and going back to the basics -- what
does the Owner's Manual say and where are the applicable fuses and relays
located?
1. According to the 2002 Toyota Camry Owner's Manual (Check your Owners Manual):
"The DRL system will make your headlights come on at a reduced brightness
when:
The light switch s in the "DRL" position.
The ignition is on with the engine running.
The headlight switch is off.
The parking brake is released."
4. Test the system, ensuring the step 1 conditions are set. (Engine running, Multi-function
Switch on Turn Signals in "DRL" position, headlight switch off
(repeating what the manual says -- it should be obvious that in the
"DRL" position, the headlight switch should be off / do not have the
switch positioned to "High Beam"), and the Parking Brake
"off").
5. If DRL lights do not work, check the engine compartment Fuse and Relay Box.
there is a 5 Amp DRL fuse -- replace it with the spare. Test (step 4).
6. If it does not work, swap around or replace relays -- there are three (3).
Any one of them could be bad (stuck or burned out). Test (step 4).
7. Other less likely possible issues
could be that the Multi-function Switch is broken or a connection / wire is
broken. [Beyond the scope of this
process.]
If there isnt a special bulb for the drl then it is usually the low beam bulbs.
Testimonial: "Thanks Andrew for your prompt reply."
Ck running light relay
SOURCE: drl not working nor are low beams high beams work properly
Ok look under the bagtterry tray, there is a black box bolted to the body, it is the headlight ground and has a really bad tendency to corode due to the design.
SOURCE: Drl and high beams dont work
Check the bulbs -- the daytime running lamps use the highbeams on the resistor -- There are two filliments per bulb one high; one low. If both high beam filliments are out nothing will work....replace bulbs if this is the case.
SOURCE: Low Bean Lights Inoperative on 1997 Acura TL
there should be a fuse and/or relay that operates the low beams, or try replacing the bulbs.
SOURCE: instrument cluster inoperative, transmission shifting problems
These vans have had issues with the PIN connections to the instrument clusters. With time the solder on the main PIN connection will begin to fail. The good news this may be repaired at home. First you'll need to remove the instruments. To do so remove the dash components from around the instruments then the (4) screws) that hold the instruments in place. Carefully detach the wire connection from the back of it; take to a well lit area. Look for a PIN with a failed solder joint (this will appear as a slight black or grey circle. If found apply heat and let solder begin to flow; the allow to cool and reassemble. If you look at my history you'll see I've helped others with this issue. The attached link may help: http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-caravan/197192-99-grand-caravan-intermittent-dead-dashboard.html
As for the transmission I expect this a seperate issue, possibly the BCM but I'd like to review further.
Please let me know if this assisted you,

It sounds like your DRL RELAY/Headlight relay. I had this happen with a 2000.
Please rate me if this helps You.
Here is some info that I hope is helpful to you.
This first part is how to disable the DRL
TOYOTA. From the Toyota technical service bulletin EL011-00 Web site for specific models determine where the module is; either the DRL relay or the body ECU, connector number, pin #. Oct 6,2000.

-disconnect battery- Then remove the wire with pin attached and tape to the harness. (consider just cut and tape the wire) -check operation- [except the 2000 MY-Avalon, additionally you need to ground the wire at the module end of the cut wire]
And here is the Headlamp relay part number.

Thanks Andrew for your prompt reply. I do get low and (separately) high beams at the full switch position, so bulbs burned out is not an issue now. Anywhere I can get an electrical wiring diagram to try to logically trace this problem?
I will check and see if i can find a place that might have one to download. Did you check the fuse and the relay for the drl?
Yes. I swapped out the 5Amp fuse for the spare in the Engine Compartment Fuse and Relay Box. (BTW, it did not appear to be burned out.) I also swapped around several relays (same part number) -- it appears there are three (DRL 2, DRL 3, and DRL 4) in the large engine compartment Fuse and Relay Box.
I did not replace these relays, as I a not sure which one(s) is(are)(may be) bad and some of them are expensive ($30+). Trying to focus in on the true culprit. I am going to check under different light conditions, as a daytime/nighttime automatic sensor may be at play here and I have not come across definitive specifications relating to this. My endeavors bridge afternoon and evening, and may be my problem...(?)
OK. Here's the answer:
1. The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) operate the High Beams (inner Lamps) at a reduced power.
2. Duh // according to the 2002 Toyota Camry Owner's Manual:
"The DRL system will make your headlights come on at a reduced brightness when:
The light switch s in the "DRL" position.
The ignition is on with the engine running.
The headlight switch is off.
The parking brake is released.
My situation did not take in to account -- The parking brake being released.
Problem solved // this time. Something about reading the manual....LoL
Thanks //
Guess it pays to start at the very basics. Didnt think to start from there.
My camry head light not working ( Fuse a good/ relay a good but no power coming) can someone help me ???
