1996 corolla turns over but wont start, was hesitating slightly before it stopped working
I was driving to work, forgot something at home, turned around and floored it the half mile to my house. While i was doing this, i noticed that if i quickly jammed on the gas pedal, the engine would sputter, or hesitate really quickly before going back to normal. Anyway i got back home, shut the car off, ran inside, came back out, and tried to start the car. The car turns over just fine, but will not "catch" or begin to fire, whatever you want to call it. I replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs, still nothing. My thought was the fuel pump, but i can hear it whirring after i try to start the car, and i removed the new spark plugs to make sure the gap was correct, and they were covered in gas, so it seems as if the fuel system is fine....could it be timing? or some type of sensor? Help!
hi there sounds like you need a tune up or you need your injectors cleaned so i will help you clean them with out getting your hands dirty but you need to follow me every step of the way. first i will give you my tips
get a high quality fuel injector cleaner that you put into your fuel tank
make Shaw you have just under a full tank of fuel
while i never say that one should drive a car like it is a toy you are going to have to do some harsh exhilarating during this
1000rpm is 1 revs on your dash bored so if i say do 2500rpm it means do 2.5 on your dash (that's only if you dot know what rpm means)
never turn the car off while we do this
please do not speed you put your life and others at risk
please do not drink and drive
OK now for the step by step instructions
have what you need ready to go including the injector cleaner
start your car and let it warm up keep the revs just over 1000 rpm
as the car is running add the fuel injector cleaner
when you have done this i want you to increase the revs to about 2000rpm
keep it like this for about 30 seconds
after the revs are back down to 1000 rpm i want you to get ready to take it for a drive
OK so take it for a light drive around your street keep it very close to home as if your car stops you don't want to have to walk a long way
once you have done this for a while and you feal confident i want you to be a bit quicker in exelarating giving a bit more power remember dont speed
now once you have done this i want you to take her home and let it idle for a bit cause you need to get ready to go for a long drive
now that you have got to the bathroom and are ready to go i want you to find a nice open road where you can do 60mph
now that you are here i want you to act like ther is a road train in front of you doing 50mph
now i want you to overtake this road train applying full power by pressing fully dont on the gas
once over tiaken slow back down
i want you to do steps 11 to 13 twice at least
now go back home and let me know how it went
now something to remember for alwase
as stated i dont think you should race or rev the motor all the time to high once a month give it a good run this will loosen and clean all the rubbish from the motor and everythink will run freeley like it should
dont drink and drive
dont speed
saty safe on the roads you life is to valued
and let me know all progress as i want to know if it helped as i pout in a lot of time and effort to helping people on this site
Some of these engines have a place to drain water out of the fuel system.. Some fords actually have a stick under the hood that you push or pull That opens a valve on a water collection bowl. It's not labeled usually. It might state where it is in the owners manual under fuel water drainage or something similar.. if that bowl is full it will cause hesitation... If it gets over full it will cause runability problems. Another possibility since you said it's black smoke is one of your injectors is sticking at low rpms and squirting raw fuel into the cylinder till the rpms get up enough to burn that fuel off completely then then the injector works a little better.... Do you notice any missing... Feel something under the hood like the air cleaner housing and make sure the vibration is constant and doesn't have a small sudden shake and the n smoothe... And then a small sudden shake again. If it does have this shake you can trouble shoot which injectors by with the engine running loosening an injector line and seeing if the engine runs worse or not.. If it runs worse tighten it up and move to the next line till you unscrew one and feel and hear no difference... When you find that one that's the injector with the problem.

As with any no start problem, have you checked for spark at the plugs and normal fuel pressure at the injectors ?
Does it crank with normal compression ?
If you knew why it stopped running in the first place, you may find out why it wont do anything at all now.
When you say it won't turn over, you do mean , when you turn the key, nothing happens, right ? Does the starter engage at all ? Does something click under the hood ? Any noises ? Can you hear the fuel pump whirring ?
It sounds like you have some dirt in your gas tank or your fuel pump has one of your fuel lines have a crack init and sucking air . Good luck and let me know how you do. Your fuel pump is proubly below the trunk floor. remove the carpet and the bolts in the floor. number your hoses and remove the fuel pump. Use a ohm meter and ohm out the pump, or take it to auto parts and they will check it out for you. [email protected]
1996 fuel injector corolla idles at 1000rpm on start-up.when i stop at a robot or stop street it idles at 500rpm and have to feed it petrol to stop it from switching off.tried fuel injector cleaner but this does not solve the problem.
the alternator may of went bad and stopped charging so the car died when the battery went dead. Charge the battery and test to start with. Are you saying wont turn over ot turns over and wont start. If it turns over and wont start then it could be several things. Will need to get it diagnosed to be sure
OD is "overdrive". It's another gear that is used for highway driving. It lets your car get better fuel economy at high speeds. It should always be on unless you're towing something.
You probably hit a switch or something to turn it off(it's usually on the gear stick). So just look around and turn it back on. It wont hurt your car if it's off though. You'll just get slightly worse gas mileage at higher speeds
