Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The check engine light is on because ECM (Control Module) detected a fault with your car's system. ECM has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. You'll need to get the codes checked from a nearby dealer/mechanic. Please revert back for more help.

Smelled gas and check engine light came on. Periodically have smelled gas over the past 6 months or so. What is cause?

Hi Ed.
this is all i could find at the moment.
Gas Cap Causing Gasoline Smell in Car. I know it may seem obvious, but a loose or missing gas cap can cause a fuel smell in your vehicle. You could even have a faulty gas cap that is leaking fumes. A faulty gas cap can also cause the check engine light to illuminate with a DTC on newer cars.

I got a 2000 Buick regal gs what would cause me to get really bad gad mileage and you can smell gas in the car

First and most important, check the fuel rail, injectors and fuel lines to the engine and make sure you have no leaks. If you can't see the injectors on the back side, get a mirror and good light. This needs checked. Next check the fuel pressure regulator. pull the vacuum hose off of it and smell for gas in/at the hose. If you smell gas, replace the regulator. Next check all the vacuum lines broken ones cause a lean mixture and the computer will throw more gas to the engine. You must have the check engine light on, Check for codes. If it isn't check for codes anyway.

Check engine light gas smell

Use an OBD II testing equipment to search for trouble codes. The burning smell can be from lubricant oil or a burnt out gasket.

Gas smell and burning smell from honda 1997

Could be two different problems.
If the check engine light is not on, I would look at the vapor canister for the gas tank. Its usually mounted in the engine compartment.
If you have a small oil leak, the fumes will be sucked into the passenger compartment thru the cowl vents.

My check engine light is on and I smell gas. 2005 chev. Suburban

Ok, the first thing to do is to have someone check the computer for trouble codes. The light is telling you there is a problem with the engine or emission system.

Check engine is on and there is a gas smell

First off, you check for codes within a day or two
of any check light being on your dash

Then you have the system that the codes point
to ,diagnosed & component tested

You certainly never continue to drive any vehicle
for 2 or 3 days, let alone 2 or 3 weeks ,unless you
intend to ruin it & have a possible big repair bill.

Those lights are not the old idiot lights of the 1970's
They are actual fault codes & a vehicle in need of repair

The Gas Smell may be an EVAP System issue
The gas smell should be enough to stop using it
immediately & have resolved

I am smelling gas but see no gas leaking

Is your check engine light on? Fumes rise, so if the leak is in the top of the tank or the filler neck, this would allow the fumes to escape, smelling of gas, and tripping your check engine light.

Kia Rio Check Engine Light

check the fuel line hose near the fuel regulator for wear as they tend to leak or corrode causing a gas smell inside the car. My 2000 Kia Sportage just had the same problem with the gas smell inside the car.
