This may have to be re-set at the dealership. By removing the battery cable will not completely clear the code. It is still stored within the memory. But by taking off the cable will "maybe turn the light out" with it being a Jag it's more than likely it will have to be reset with a computer at the dealer.

The Check Engine light is most likely an emissions issue, not necessarily a malfunction that will disable the car.
Go to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, or other retail auto parts store and have them read the OBD codes for you. They will tell the story.
Good luck !
By the way, fix the easiest / cheapest codes to clear first, if there is more than one error code displayed - often the additional codes will clear up too.
When you fix most anything triggered by a "Check Engine " light, you have to clear the computer. There are 2 ways to clear it. One is to unhook the Neg cable from the Battery for 10 minutes, the other is to use a scanner.
Sometimes there is a problem when unhooking the Battery as it affects other things when the power is lost. You can get this service done for free at Autozone or Oreillys and they will rescan your vehicle. There may be different codes showing now that you have changed some parts and it may be the better way to go.
If you used the Battery cable removal technique and the light still was on, you would need to rescan your car anyway. If you have a question about codes you can contact this site.
you need either a code reader or a scanner that will clear the codes, but without finding and fixing the problem, chances are good the light will come back on. good luck.
No it will not. If you just bought the car. no doubt it has problems and the person you bought the car from had cleared the codes. After you have driven it a few days, the light has come on. because the engine computer (ECM) has run the tests and if a a component fails the test 2 times it will turn the light on. Sometimes a good scan tool (tech2) can tell you the "miles since cleared" and you how how many miles ago that the computer was cleared of all codes.
If i is running fine then it wouldn't be anything inportant.I have a 91 chev and the engine light is alway's on but runs good.Put a code reader on it to erase the code and it won't come on again.
