There is an actuator that controlls a blend door that is called a blend door actuator. This "door" is inside the evaporator case and it opens and closes to divert air over either the evaporator (for air conditioning) or the heater core (for heat) and can be somewhere in between for warm air. your temp knob sends an electric signal to this actuator to controll that door. the actuator has plastic gears inside of it that can become stripped of its teeth causing a "tapping" sound. These trucks comonly have this problem. The actuator is screwed on to the evaporator case and the blend door actuator is a mounted on top either behind the radio or the glove box. It;s about the size of a deck of cards

Hearter temp control was blowing too hot, now only blows cold

Clicking sound you hear is the worn brushes in your blower motor. At this point the blower moter may or may not start with the switch. THe blower motor is faulty so I would change that first, then check for vacuum leaks or faulty selector cable for the heat blend door. It could have came off door side or heater control side.

My 2004 ford explorer makes a clicking noise when selecting between cold and hot air. And the AC will not blow cold air / heater will not blow warm air.

it is the blend door, driver side by gas pedal, very hard to get to, the door has a rotery gear that when the teeth break off, thats when you get the clicking sound

Loud clicking noise from dash whenever heat

I have and 2002 with rear air and had the same noise and problem in the back. There is motor in the back that moves a flapper door open and closed to blend the hot and cold. The motor has plastic gears in it and they strip out making a clicking noise when the motor cannot hit the point that the heat control dial is being set too. Probably the same set under the front dash. You will more than likely need to by a new motor assy.

Temperature Control not working on 1999 Ford Explorer

Sounds like your temperature actuator is not moving or your temp door is broken. On max a-c ,coolant is shut off to your heater core allowing only cold air in.
