Electrical shorting? 1997 VW Golf K2 has a problem. When brake lights are on, turn signal goes off. All fuses have been replaced related to lights and signals. When headlights are on, signal lights in the rear flash very quickly even though bulbs are freshly replaced. Is this a wiring, curcuit or fuse issue?

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

here is howw it goes, the power from the fuse goes to the brake switch then to the signal light switch and from there to the rear lights, test for signal from the brake switch to the turn signal, if good the signal switch is bad

bad earth wire on the rear lights more like

Remove dash and make sure main electrical plug is snapped in place .Also look for a lose ground wire.

faulty ignition switch

I had a VW rabbit that developed mad electrical problems. It started when one day the headlights remained on and would not shut off. It turned out that a $2.00 gasket for the antenna wire had failed. This allowed road water from the wheel well to leak onto the fuse box. In time the fuse panel corroded and shorted out. I had to replace the fuse box twice and use rubber epoxy to seal the leak.
Check all fuses and electrical wiring for signs of shorts or corrosion.

I doubt it's the fuse. A very common problem is the brake switch on your brake pedal goes bad. This causes the EPC light and no brake lights. This switch was recalled by VW in 2007. Here is the story from USA Today

Your VW dealer will replace this switch free...

Pull out the ashtray and slide the plate next to it over and there is where the DLC is. Hope this helps

You have a broken wire to the turn/brake light portion of the light as they use the same wire. Or where the plug goes into the light assy could be bad. Torsion mount lights are horrible and you should think about replacing with a universal light that you can wire direct.
