Replacing battery cables

How to replace the battery cables on a 2001 hyundai elantra

  • sorgfelt Nov 11, 2008

All I want to do is to remove the positive cable, so that I can replace the battery. I've tried a 10mm socket and the screw turns with the washer, so I turn and turn and nothing comes off. Is there some special tool to use to keep the screw from turning so that you can loosen it?

Don't feel bad I had the same problem getting mine off and I have been a heavy equipment mechanic for 23 years . These cables are like nothing I have ever seen . Under the bell shaped terminal is a brass cone with 6 fingers and they are connected to the stud which turns when you try to loosen the nut because it is bottomed out . The way it works is when you tighten the nut the fingers grab into the battery post and draw the cone towards the post and locks it tight . It is almost impossible to loosen it once it corrodes up , As it spins it will break off the fingers and ruin the terminal . If you can pull it straight up once it has broke free by turning it you maybe able to work with it better . Hope this helps

OK,  if you need to ask this question, you probably should not do the job yourself.  cables are attached to battery with clamps,  use a 10mm wrench or socket, it shoud be very obvious.
Pull positive cable off battery FIRST!  After than it doesn't matter what order you do them in ... just hook positive to battery last at the end ... otherwise you might become a welder in the process.
Follow cables to where they go (you'll probably be under the jacked up car on safety jack stands for the starter +POS cable)  attached ... with a nut and a washer underneath ... should be obvious.
Negative cable is attached to car body or engine .. with a nut and probably a washer.

SOURCE: 2001 elantra master power window switch

at the bottom and top of the switch there are retaining tabs. you can try to pop it out at those points with a flathead screw driver, but it is sometimes easier to just remove the door panel to get it out.

04 hyundai elantra positive battery cable needs to be replaced any instructions or tips?

Yes, just in case you have a theft deterrent system, do not leave the battery cable disconnected longer than 30 minutes as that will cause your radio to loose its smarts and not be able to turn on.

How do you replace the cigarette lighter in a 2001 hyundai elantra?

The panel in which the lighter socket is mounted has to be removed.
The socket is held in place by a sleeve which screws onto the body of the socket from the back of the panel. Removing this sleeve will allow the socket to come out. When you do this, make sure negative battery cable is first disconnected.

If you need help removing the panel, please let me know.

I , i try to find the fuel filter for my hyundai elantra 2001

The fuel filter is located under the rear seat in a compartment above the fuel tank. Also, a filter sock at the base of the fuel pump located
in the fuel tank.

On 2001 models the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump. To replace the fuel filter, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the back seat and take fuel pump cover off to get to the fuel pump. Then you have to 1) disconnect the electrical connector from fuel pump/fuel sending unit, 2) disconnect the high pressure hose and the fuel return hose from the fuel pump and 3) remove the fuel pump mounting flange screws. You can then lift the fuel pump and replace the filter.

Good luck and hope this helps
