If the reservoir is empty, you may want to start out by draining your radiator completely and starting over. there is a petcock valve at the bottom of the radiator. EPA Says you can't drain it onto the ground, but that's your decision. Anyway.....Buy full strength antifreeze. Take a empty gallon jug (could be a gallon milk jug so you can see more easily) and mix one half antifreeze to one half water.Take the cap off the radiator and add it it there. When it is full, put the cap back on the radiator and crank your vehicle to circulate it.Then start adding the antifreeze/ water mixture to the reservoir. As it goes down keep adding until it levels out at the normally hot line on the reservoir. As for the type of antifreeze........it's basically all the same which is Propylene glycol. CAUTION ! DON"T REMOVE THE RADIATOR CAP AFTER THE ENGINE HAS WARMED UP ! Hope this helps.
Antifreeze? Hello, not good...Antifreeze is not substitute for fuel - might get it diluted enough if you completely fill tank. Or did you use 'Heat' water removal gas additive? See this post on Yahoo: How do you eliminate water in your gas tank Yahoo Answers
You will see several tanks under the hood. One will show a windshield with a wiper blade, this is not the Radiator tank. Another should follow a small rubber line from the Radiator and may say "overflow". This is the correct tank.
If the Antifreeze is LOW you need to pressure test the Radiator and system for leaks. The Antifreeze should not get low. It means there is a problem.
There is a fill line for Cold and Hot on most tanks. It is normal for the level to fluctuate.
If you are really in doubt, go to Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys and they will show you where the tank is.
This could be a cracked tank for your radiator filler. Try placing a clean paper towel under the antifreeze tank and fill it with coolant. If there is a crack in the tank you will see it or the results of it. Replace the antifreeze tank - these things get cracked when people put water in the tank instead of mixed water and antifreeze. You get a hard freeze and bingo - your coolant tank breaks - usually on a seam and underneath it where you can't easily see it.
pop the hood, there should be a light yellow partially see through tank that holds either green or orange (probably green in the case of a minivan) liquid that might say coolant on it. coolant and antifreeze are the same but make sure not to put orange in a green tank/green in an orange tank. also check what mix of antifreeze and water is best for your car. they sell it in 50/50 mixes which is common. BUT!! biggest thing is to check which color antifreeze/coolant your car takes and match it.
It is mounted on the firewall (rear of engine compartment) just to the left (viewed from the front) of the brake master cylinder. It is basically triangular in shape. It has a screw on pressure cap and two small hoses mounted to the front of it. It's made of plastic and has a 3rd hose mounted on the bottom of it. It SHOULD contain red or orange colored coolant. DO NOT use plain water, as water without DexCool antifreeze will cause internal engine rust which WILL cause internal rusting of the engine. I've seen idiots do that before. It cost them hundreds of dollars in unnecessary repairs about a year later. Add a 50/50 mixture of DexCool antifreeze and water. If you look in your owners manual, in the maintenance section, it will show you a picture of what the tank looks like. Charlie
