Engine is sputtering when I stop and the idling is below 1000 rpm.

Hi Sarah,
This is the standard Idle speed of the engine, measured in RPM (revolutions per minute)
Nothing to worry about unless it fluctuates when you are stopped and in neutral.
Otherwise, enjoy your Honda.

Check for vacuum leaks. With the rpm difference that large it should be pretty easy to hear the vacuum leak hissing with the engine running.

Nope. The neutral switch has 2 functions. It prevents the engine from starting in any other gear but park and neutral. It also switches on the back up lights when in reverse. You have electrical problems located elsewhere.

DOES YOUR CAR STALL OR DIE AT A COMPLETE STOP? SPUTTER FOR A SECOND OR TWO WHILE DRIVING, RPM GAGE PEG OUT THEN ENGINE SHUTS DOWN? YOU HAVE ANY MORE SYMTOMS?

check the idle air control valve at the intake manifold. its a silver valve on top try tapping it with a hammer and see if it idles

Only 1000-2000 RPM? Does it do that in any gear?
