Hi, My 1995 2.2 camry has a loud knocking coming from the lower area of the timing cover. I took the cover off thinking maybe a bearing on the idler or tensioner let go but they seem solid and have no sloppy movement. The oil and water seem to be fine as well. The only piece I found with unusual play is the timing gear on the crankshaft. The keyway is kind of loose and I am not sure if this would cause the noise or not. How much play should this piece have? I can not even find the part listed anywhere to buy a replacement. The car started acting up and losing power going up hills from a stopped position. I assumed the timing belt slipped due to a bad timing component but now looking at it the only thing I can find is that loose timing gear. The engine noise goes away completely and runs fine at higher rpms . would the engine go away if I had a bad main bearing, rod or other such engine killing part at a higher rpm ? Optional Information: Year: 1995 Make: Toyota Model: camry Engine: 2.2 4cyl
I do think that loose key and keyway could cause the knock. It would also explain the loss of power, due to the engine timing not being spot on.
A knocking big end or main bearing would not improve at higher revs, it would get worse.
Act soon before the keyway in the crankshaft itself is too badly damaged, by removing the crankshaft pulley, lower timing belt cover, and belt guide. You can then get a precise idea of what exactly is worn. This may assist

You may actually have to find an oversize key, for a neat fit in the crankshaft. It may be necessary to file or grind it to fit. Engineering supply houses stock them, eg

Thanks Geoff , I did find out that what it was by shimming it with some worn out main bearing pieces I had laying around. I am have a really hard time finding anywhere that sells the timing gear anywhere. Any ideas ? I was planning on oversizing the key as well. Thanks so much for the advice.
Greg
Geoff's advice was dead on. Thanks
Hi Greg, well it depends on your location of course, and yes, most wreckers will not want to sell a gear off a good motor.
You may be able to find a wrecker with a blown or worn out engine who will, through a parts sourcing network such as

or maybe a new one through
