While my car is on and idling my light flashes on. As soon as I feed gas, it goes off. I just had an oil change thinking that was why the light came on. 2 days later, same issue. Any other ideas besides the sensor? Maybe the oil pump could cause this? Thanks, Angela

It started out my oil light only came on when i came to an idle or hit the brake but now as time has passed it stays on once then engine warms up until i press the gas. I am not sure if it is the oil pressure switch which was already replaced once last year when the engine was rebuilt or if its the pump. any advice would help. Thank you. I have a 04 dodge stratus se

Don't delay on this. Take the vehicle in and have the oil pressure sensor checked. It could be just the sensor or it could be something more serious. A drop in oil pressure could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

When Car in drive the noice is loud but when I place car in park noice goes away. Also noise will go away completely after 20min.-30min. on highway. Also you can hear noice from cab, but not from outside the vehicle. Please help!

High temp low oil pressure light comes on after driving for a few minutes, then off when engine at driving rpm. At stop light (idle or low rpm) light comes back on. Normal driving it goes out.

You need to find out why you have low oil pressure. It is normal that as engine rpm's increase, the oil pressure will rise- the oil pump is moving oil faster. Even though your light goes out, you could still have critically low oil pressure. There should be sufficient pressure at idle to keep the light off. The light will come on when your oil pressure is almost nil- I believe for some it's as low as 8 psi. Normally, oil pressure at idle is specified anywhere from 15 to 40 psi. You would have to check specifications for your Expedition. To verify oil pressure, hook up a mechanical gauge at the oil pressure sending unit on the engine block. Check with a local shop.

The causes run from easy, simple to budget busting ruin. Low oil level, wrong grade oil, real old oil, oil leaks, internal oil leaks, worn oil pump, worn crankshaft bearings. It was pretty common on older very high mileage cars to have a fluttering oil light at stops and idle. It was time for a rebuild, or time to look for another car.

96 chevy cheynne 5.7 vortechas about 40to50 pounds oil pressure when first sart in morning and when it gets to temp. it drops to 20to25pnds and at a stop it goes to 0 and gauge light comes on until i give...

Well it could be the sending unit for the gauge.
But odds are the oil pump or engine bearings are worn out.
As the engine warms up, the metal spaces expand and the oil gets thinner. The oil pressure drops some under normal conditions, but not more than 10 or 15psi. Normal idle pressure with the engine warmed up is probably 25psi.
You could check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to make sure its not the sending unit.
Once the oil pressure starts staying below 20psi for long periods you'll start hearing noises.

Oil light flashes after driving for a while

First check that the oil level is appropriate. If the level is in the proper notch in the dipstick, you might have serious problems. Oil is heavy when cold, and produces acceptable pressure. When the oil warms up, it is less dense, and its ability to produce pressure is reduced. If during normal warm up and driving, the pressure drops below what is acceptable for the engine, the oil pressure light will come on, warning you that major engine damage is impending. Stop driving the car, and take it to a shop for inspection.

Oil pump at idle is good when car is warming up, but after it get real warm after 20 miles of driving the idle oil presure is low about 15 lbs

  • This is normal. On your car, on a cold start the pressure will be around 75 PSI. After the engine warms an oil pressure of 15-20 PSI at idle is just what it should be. The oil pressure gauge should escalate when accelerating up a bit to. If your old school like me 15 PSI mean danger but tat Caddy is just fine.

2001 camaro 3800 eng. when eng is cold oil pressure is high after warms up oil pressure drop very low at idle. why??

When the engine and oil are cold it will show a high pressure because of the viscosity of the oil. When it warms up the oil is thinner. If it doesn't drop below 20-25 psi at warm idle I wouldn't worry about it as that is normal.

When car is cold oil pressuer is at 75 lbs when car is warmed uped it drops to 40 lbs (v6 3800) when warmed uped and give it gas it goes up to 60 lbs but when i stop it dropes to 45 lbs why is this please...

When the oil is cold it is thinner or watery and the pump moves more oil as it turns making the pressure go up. As the oil warms up it thickens and the pump moves less oil letting the pressure go down. Increasing the engine speed makes the pump turn faster, therefore it moves more oil and the pressure goes up. Changing oil grades will change the numbers somewhat, for example 10W40 will give you different readings than 5W30. I don't see any problem with the readings you put in your posting. I wouldn't be concerned until the warm idle pressure gets down to about 30 or a little lower. Hope this helps.

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm

Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.
Let me know.

Oil light.

cheapest thing to do is replace oil pressure sender ,unless you have an oil pressure gauge to test actual pressure, sender should be near oil filter housing could be 1 to 3 wire connector, you'll need special socket to r&r part, also make sure car idles normal when hot, if surging or low you may get light flicker in drive.

Oil pressure high when engine cold. but fine when engine is warm

It is normal for oil pressure to be higher when the oil is cold. As the oil heats up, it will thin out. Since your oil pump is driven faster with the acceleration of the engine, your pressure will also increase. On a engine up to full temp, your oil pressure will probably be around 20 psi and maybe up to 60 at full load. But on a cold engine, you may see 60 psi at idle. I dont know if your high oil pressure is causing your vehicle to stall, but maybe your running the wrong weight/type of oil for your truck. If you live in a extreme cold area, you may want to look into a block heater to help warm up your engine faster.
