Question about 1998 Volkswagen Beetle
When I start my 98 beetle, I hear a loud whirring sound. It goes away after a minute or so. My water temp light comes on for a couple minutes, then goes away. The light sometimes comes on again after driving a few minutes. It's never overheated. I'm assuming it's the water pump.
I have a 2000 Beetle and about 8 months ago the water temp light would come on, but it didn't seem to overheat. I called a service place and told them the problem--they said it could just be a damaged thermostat, but since the 2000 Beetle doesn't actually have a temp gauge, that you couldn't tell by just looking at the water temp indicator. So I took it in, and the service folks said it was a cracked water pump and damaged thermostat.

Sounds like the starter stays "sticked"on... Check the starter relay or after the sound goes away touch the starter for heat. If its too hot it means it stays on working even when the engine is allready running...
