1997 GMC Safari van brakes would not operate when the brake pedal was pressed, infact they would not push down at all, until thebrake pedal was push numerous times. The anti-lock brake light was on prior to the brakes not operating correctly. The GMC car dealership said this was the cause of the breakes not operating properly. Everything else was okay the master cylinder, brake lines, fluid levels, etc. But I am not convinced that the anti-lock brake senser caused the brakes to not operate correctly.

The ABS light is usually a speed sensor problem and is a GM nuisance . it should not affect normal braking. It might be a booster for power assist problem, which will affect normal braking (expensive). Get rid of that old GMC.

SOURCE: 1997 GMC safari van brakes do not operate correctly when pushed. They did not stop the van until the brake pedal was pushed numerous times.

Check fluid level in the master cylinder, fill to the top if low with DOT 4 fluid. If you still have a spongy petal, look for any leaks in lines or in the calipers at all four wheels (you might have drum brakes in the rear in which case you will be checking the wheel cylinders for any fluid leaks. If no leaks are found bleed the brakes, starting from the furthest wheel from the master cylinder (passenger side rear)-open the bleeder bolt, and have someone push the petal to the floor and HOLD it there-watch the stream of fluid that comes out of the bleeder-if it is a steady stream, tighten it up and have the helper 'pump' the brake, if the fluid that comes out 'spurts' out, there is air in the line and that wheel needs to be bled again. Close the bleeder, have them pump it up, then open it again and tell them to push the petal to the floor again and HOLD it to the floor-close it, repeat as necessary until you get that steady stream. Once you have it, go to the next furthest wheel (driver side rear). Then do the passenger side front, then driver side front. DO NOT allow the master cylinder to run dry, you need to keep filling the resevior so that it is not empty as you do this, and have lots of rags available to mop up the brake fluid that will be everywhere. If you take your time, you can do this-it is just a messy job but not complicated.

Air in the brakes lines or out of adjustment,adjust brakes before bleeding.

When i start van each morning and go to leave the first time i hit brakes they lock up or grab very hard. pedal pumps up and then are fine. whats is wrong 1997 gmc pass. van 170.000 mi. v8.

This is a common thing with some cars and trucks, if its the back wheels that lock up then you will need to have the drums resurfaced, the drums are out of round and are locking up until the brake are used, have the brakes checked and have the drums turmed, good day.

Lost power steering and power brakes but belt is still moving

if you lost all brakes ...is there still fluid in your reservoir ?...if not look under your van ...on the drivers side ...you will see a covered box that is where your brake lines all come into ...take off cover look for any leaks ..most likely you will have to change all the brakes lines ....if they are leaking ....big job ...but can be done easy ...with a little patience ....make sure you change them all ....best thing to do is cut off old lines but leave all threaded nuts in the box ...mark on a paper where to put them back .....make sure ...you mark down properly ...when i did mine i used life time brake lines ....because i never wanted to do it again in years to come ..harder to work with ..but saves you time down the road in getting the better lines ....you will need a good line bender ....go slow with them in order not to break them ...when you bend them ....for your power steering check for leaks too ...change the lines if you need too ....it's the most pain in the **** to do in an Astro van ect ...or Safari .....once you have changed them all .....do not pump the brakes to bleed them ...just keep pushing the pedal to the floor ....i usually fill the res....then let it bleed it naturally ...until i see fluid then i keep my foot to the floor and release and keep doing it till there is pressure ..takes awhile ....if you change the lines ..change them all ....
Good luck i hope this helped you out .....

Antilock brakes not funtioning properly on "hard" stops

Yes, I never did like ABS brakes because of this. What you have experienced is the ABS system working as it is designed to do. I know, it doesn't seem like you should still be moving after slamming on the brakes, but here is how it works;
When you apply a fast and hard pedal and the ground beneath you is wet the wheels stop at different times. There are sprockets mounted to the rear of the rotors, with magnetic sensors that monitor the wheel info. for all four wheels mounted next to the brake calipers. On a hard stop when the sensor detects one wheel stopping and another still going, these sensors send "pulses" to each wheel until the vehicle has stopped without the brakes having to lock up. The pulsiing is what you experienced and is a normal part of the ABS function.
Please rate this and let me know if it helped.
