sounds like your air intake gasket is leaking. If you take ether, or brake cleaner and spray it where the air intake is bolted on, the idle will come down to normal. Is this problem existing even after the engine is warmed up, or just when you first start it up?

check for fault code in the ambient air temp sender sensor and the idle speed sensor

I would look at the cold start injector first and work from there.

It is an interference engine, so the odds of damaging the valves are high.

check all the vacuum hoses going to the upper intake manafold if all hoses check out ok then replace the idle air control valve.

Wouldn't advise that. you are just trying to mask the problem, and it usually doesn't work. First, find out why. Have you had your diagnostic codes read? Is the car in good tune otherwise? maybe you have a vacuum leak-that definitely causes a high idle. Your air filter clean? Fuel pump at specs? Accelerator linkage working properly and not binding? Many, many things can cause a high idle condition: If it's a last resort to take it to a mechanic, find one you trust. Good luck.
