96 GMC 1500 5.7 this problem has been reoccurring. Missfire on the 4 cylinder. It comes and goes. The check engine light would come on then off when I dropped the trailer or when pulling a hill. Loss of power and obvious engine smoothness. Had several mechanics put their computer on it and the computer wouldn't store codes so.. it did relay that it was the 4th cylinder. Now it runs horrible and gobbled up a tank of fuel in 150 mls. Now its consistent ...runs like ****!

It indicates injector problems
leaking injector seal /s dirty injectors
you can try moving no 4 injector to another cylinder and if the misfire moves as well , replace that injector
it it doesn't move the misfire , it is coils or ECM problems

Have you check the injector relay or maybe a fuse for injectors.

SOURCE: My engine light has come on in my 2004 GMC crew

If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.

A solid light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on. Until you get this code, it's impossible to determine what parts need to be checked or replaced.

I have a few error codes for my 2004 dodge ram hemi 1500 4x4. they are po172, po300, and po304.

The p0172 is due to an O2 sensor in the exhaust seeing too much oxygen, the po300 is a missfire present and p0304 is cylinder #4 missfire, check plug and wire to #4 and repair, this should also take care of the p0172, if a cylinder is missing it is just pump air into the exhaust thus causing the code p0172.

you may try your rotor button and distributor cap. and spark plug wires. try your map sensor also they tend to cause a lot of misfiring if they go bad.hope this helps.

I have a 2000 gmc sierra 5.3 with a number 6 cylinder missfire. things i have done so far: 1. compression test on number 6 tested fine,as well as the rest of the cylinders 2. leak down test. Held...

I would check the valves for number 6. If one or both are burned, stuck or out of adjustment it would cause your problem. If a cam lobe for that cylinder is burned or badly worn it could be the culprit.

Wont start

Ignore the code for now. Start with the basics. You need to check fuel pressure. You need to check for spark at more than one cylinder. Must be blue and powerful. Make sure the vehicle can get air into the engine. report back with these answers.

96 gmc 1500 4x4 with vortec motor

Timing is not adjustable. You do however need to turn the distributor to set the cam/crank correlation to keep the check engine light off. Although you need to hook it to a scanner to be able to set this.
