S70 AWD - vibration when in drive

My wife turned over her 99 Volvo S 70 to me when she got a new Japanese car. When the car is in gear but stopped at a light, there is what seems to me more than normal vibration through the brake pedal - sometimes worse than other times. If I shift to neutral the vibration stops. The dealer denied there was anything wrong with the car, and said that this was normal. (I have a '90 240DL manual transmission, so I was not used to this vibration, so what do I know?). But it doesn't seem right. Is this a transmission issue? Do other S70 AWD owners experience this?

Otherwise the car runs OK (relatively speaking for a newer Volvo). I do think it is louder then it ought to be when I accelerate hard - also making me think that there is a tranmission issue. The wife's new car is a hybrid, so it shuts down after braking, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I always had manual transmissions.

Had dealer check for exhaust leak, reported to be none.

Replaced universal joint - reduced the vibration a bit, but still noticable.

Just in case you are still having an issue.

There is a suspension mount on the right side of the engine bay just under the timing cover. Remove the right front wheel and the two 10mm plastic nuts in the fender liner. Now pull back the fender liner. Using a flash light you should be staring at the crankshaft harmonic balancer (big round circular pulley that has a large bolt, 21mm, in the middle and four smaller, 10mm, bolts around it).

Just under the pulley there is an engine mount turned sideways. Use your flashlight and a mirror if you can't get a good look at it, Most likely you will see that the rubber is pushed apart and in pieces. The upper portion of the mount that bolts to the engine with 13mm bolts will be sitting on the sub frame. There is supposed to be rubber between the upper portion and the frame. Just look closely because from time to time it will just sink into the mount and may look ok unless you look close.

If the mount is ok then you will need to take it to a Volvo shop. There are a couple of service bulletins for vibration and harshness on early (1998-2000 awd cars). They relate to some adjustments or shim instillation on the left side mount, but I can't remember the settings off the top of my head.

I hope this helps.

Vibration is common onvehicles this happens with moving parts, however vibration is all relative. how severe is it? and are there other problems like does it have a hard time shifting. does it bog down when hyou accelerate? post back and i can pinpoint a solution if there is a problem.

if it seems louder than normal and you feel vibration it could be that there is an exaust leak under the vehicle. believe it or not an exaust leak can vibrate the vehicle. I would check this out. If the vehicle is running good then I seroiusly doubt it's a transmission problem. please rate this thanks

How to turn off traction control in 99 s70 volvo that has automatic traction

On my 1998 S70 there is a rocker switch next to the sunroof and back window and mirror heat below the tachometer on the right hand side of the dashboard. If you have no other way, remove the fuse from traction control on the the main fuse box under the hood on the drivers side. There should be a guide to which fuse is which on the lid of the fuse box.

I have a 1999 volvo v70 awd I have no power when i drive it. The car doesnt seem go past 2000 rpms. My ets light comes on and the car wont go over 30 mph.

This was a common problem on 99's and up. It is usually a permanent fault of the throttle body. The fix can only be done at a dealer as they have to download software to the unit itself. Good luck.

VOLVO S 70 1998-When I stop at a stop sign/light my car makes a vibrating sound and then it stops after I come to a complete stop. I put on new rear brake pads(Volvo pads not after market) about a month...

Sounds like your rotors are warped,, if you installed new disc brake pads and DID NOT turn the rotors.. there is a good chance they DO need turning...

2000 Volvo S70 Starts then dies. Seems to do it more often if the engine is warm. Wait 10 minutes and it starts and runs fine.

Fuel pumps are common on these cars. Its a hard fault to duplicate with a gauge because they rarely die at idle! I would still connect a gauge and see pressures though, see what happens to them when it starts to die (if it will at idle). 99/100 times you need to replace the fuel pump, and fuel pump relay. The relay overexcites and burns out your fuel pump. As long as you dont have AWD its not a difficult job, if its AWD then you have to lower the whole back end of the car (springs, diff, AOC....) to lower the tank enough to get to the pump. Make sure that you align the pump correctly or you will have a false fuel level reading.

Same problem

Could be rust or brake dust on the rotors causing vibration. But check the suspension bushings as they could be the cause of the noise and vibration.
