My tailgate sensor, on my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 1996,keeps saying that it is open when it is not, I have tried to shut it repeatedly but it will not work. how can I fix it? The display says the tailgate is open, but it is not. Interior lights come on and off. It happens most often when I make a right turn. I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately,I could not see a way to adjust the striker.
FYI - I did eventually find the solution to my problem. It turns out there are two "liftgate ajar" switches. One is built into the tailgate latch assembly. I cut the two wires leading to this switch, but kept having the problem. Eventually, i traced the wires and found the second switch, which is for the rear glass. It is near the latch for the glass. I unplugged it and my problem went away.
I took out one screw and was able to remove the switch. The metal casing was bent allowing the black plastic body to shift partially out of the case. I snapped it back into place and bent the metal to hold it there. After reinstalling it, everything works fine. (I also reconnected the wires I had cut to the door latch assembly).

As you are turning the tailgate is flexing.
If you adjust the striker to get the tailgate to close tighter, it should fix your problem.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited vehicle information center keeps saying coolent sensor bad. I've replaced the sensor in the overflow jug and the one right next to the thermostat for the dummy guage and...

Try disconnecting the battery cable for a few minutes, this should clear the memory. If it still comes on, sounds like you have a coolant issue such as not circulating good. You could also have a overflow cap going bad. The cap will cause more trouble than what you would expect. Good Luck

The Coolant Sensor is inside coolant bottle; in this models is common ths message failed; clean the plug and reset your ECU alarms, if the message come on again, replace your coolant sensor. And, really, one message about a bad sensor/signal is one bad work engine.

Good luck.

96 jeep Grand Cherokee tailgate will not open

This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the dealer all the time.
