2003 jeep grand cherokee , first time jeep wont start and the no key light is on. Do the keys that have the chips in them need to be replaced from time to time?

No. those chips does not need to be reprogrammed in time. (it is supposed)
go to dealer and ask them to reprogram your whole antitheft system(immobilizer too)
plus put new batteries to your keyless remote controller.

This sounds like a bad chip in the key, try a spare key, if it starts with spare key then key is bad, if it doesnt start then you will need reprograming

I just replaced my battery today and noticed a switch that the battery sits on. I havent looked in to it but I would guess the car wont start or maybe even not turn over it it thinks the battery has moved from where it belongs. Hope this helps some.

it sounds like the ignition cylinder itself is worn and needs replacement. the fact that you cant turn the key. thing that can cause this is if you have to many keys on your key chain .

it is having trouble reading your key chip. You may need to get a new key thru someone other than dealer. Dealer is WAY too expensive. Check around locally and save some $$.
