Tensioner When my 2001 Audi A4 Quattro had 70k I had the timing chain tensioner replaced. Shortly after I had the timing belt replaced. I recently got a letter stating there was a class action lawsuit and I may be entitled to a refund for timing belt and timing belt tensioner problems. My question is...what is a camshaft tensioner? I have read online and cannot determine if this is related to the timing belt and if I should try to get this reimbursed also? Thanks! Jenny

Well, I'm a little confused here because there are both a timing belt tensioner and a timing chain tensioner on the car. I'm assuming you have the 1.8T engine as that is the only one I've heard about regarding the class-action suit.

The timing belt tensioner is the one keeping the timing belt in place and running the cylinder head. The timing chain tensioner is up in the cylinder head. The belt drives the exhaust cam off of the crank, and the chain drives the intake cam off of the exhaust cam. It's the belt and belt tensioner that are subject to the class action. The camshaft tensioner in my opinion would be the chain tensioner in the head, but sometimes the timing belt is referred to as the cam belt, so it may be a confusion of terminology. The suit is related to the timing belt and t-belt tensioner - apparently there have been failures of these parts due to their construction or some other factor deemed not to be the fault of the owners of the car. Regardless, the suit only covers the parts expressly stated in the wording (timing belt and tensioner) and will likely not include additional parts such as the chain tensioner, as that is not deemed a wearable item and is not part of the typical timing service (it's only replaced if it fails, which is usually signified by a diesel-like clatter from the top of the engine while it's running).

1996 audi A-6 2.8 Quattro need to replace tensioner pulley assembly

you need engine code for 96 split year. AFC or AHA I believe. each requires different pulley. Cdoe shoul be on sticker in trunk or on passenger head stamped on the tab.

When do u change the cambelt on a audi 4 2.5 diesel convertable 2005

Hi,
The manufacturer recommendation is 100K kilometers, they forget the traffic and idling operation of the engine. Most mechanics would recommend the safest time, that would be 70K kilometers or 3.5 years which ever comes.
Replacing the timing belt with tensioner bearing is must when you replace one of them.
Hope that helps you out.

Milage timing belt needs replacing

Depends on which engine you have, but generally 60-70k is recommended. Audi at one time said 80k but most of us hold that to be too long an interval to risk on an engine as expensive as these are.

Knocking when first start engine

Depending on the period of time and intensity of the knock ? If it is a rapid short ,loud knock then disappears altogether you may be dealing with a cam chain tensioner that is loosing oil pressure when the car is standing. A loose cambelt tensioner can increase the noise .
