1998 Subaru Legacy Outback - Only starts with security override

Hello! I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback that I purchased a month and a half ago. Worked fine until a couple of nights ago. I shut it off and walked into a gas station, then came back out and it would not start. After checking the manual I found out about the security override button down by the hood release. So, the car now runs fine, but will ONLY start if I hold in the override button while turning on the ignition. In addition none of the security features (valet mode, key fob, programming) seem to work. Any suggestions? Thanks! -Troy

SOURCE: Cause of noise in front differential of 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback.

there is a plug on the shaft-side of the differential. Using a ratchet remove the plug and with the engine OFF, stick your finger inside the hole and you should get fluid just below the threads of where the plug goes in.

SOURCE: what causes pulsating brakes in a 96 subaru

Assuming you are not referring to the pulsation experienced when the anti-lock braking system engages, you should replace the rotors and the pads while you are at it. The days of turning or resurfacing rotors are over. They are cheap.

Hiya,

Here you go:

2.5L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  3. Vehicles with 5-spd transmission: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and set aside.
  4. Disconnect the knock sensor wire harness retainer from the coolant hose.
  5. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) wire connector.
  6. Remove the mounting bolt and knock sensor from the engine block.

1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited. Why am I going through so many alternators.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

That is pretty crazy. It would be cheaper to get an auto electrician for an hour than to keep buying alternators. If a fuse melts, you have to find the reason why before replacing it. Jimmy rigging electrics just passes the problem along to another component. A Professional Grade Scan tool computer can diagnose in 20 minutes. They cost $3.5k to $5k!

Have you tested fuel pressure? If you have no pressure the next step would be to test all relays and fuses. Next jump the fuel pump and see if the pump kicks on. If not, bad fuel pump, if it does fire, then the security system might be disabling the pump. Make sure all fuse and relays are good b
