HI, i have a 1995 hyundai excel which has a clutch/gearbox problem, it has trouble going into gear and is hard to pick gears. it also has a rattling/rumbling noise when changing gears. could this be a thrust bearing problem?

I have a similar problem, but looks like it's a leaking slave cylinder in mine (1996) my problem is we can't undo the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder to replace it - any ideas?

The throw out bearing could cause these isues, however I would look else where before doing anything about that. A throw out bearing can be "bad" for a very long time without causing any issues other than annoyance. Is this a cable operated slave cylinder or a hydraulic? If Cable you can adjust the throw of the pedal to take up any slack that will be made from there. Your problem sounds like your not getting enough clutch pedal throw, is there allot of play in the pedal? A simple test you can do is with the car off pointing down hill (key on so steering wheel is unlocked) With the car in gear, depress the clutch pedal slowly untill the car begins to roll. If allot of travel is required then you know that your not getting full use of your clutch pedal. A Broken shift or stretched shift cable could cause this issue as well. I would start simple and work your way up. If a hyd. system it is self adjusting i would check for full fluid in the resevoir as well. Let me know how you make out and we can trouble shoot from there.

1. replace your gear oil.
2. is this an automatic or manual transmission engine? if manual, adjust your clutch release a little higher than usual to let your clutch engange earlier.

Im having trouble shifting gears in my 2001 mitsubishi . had the gear box fluids checked and its fine. ******* down gear is hardest. it acts as if it wants to stick.

Get your clutch checked, if you don't have a good functional clutch it makes shifting very hard and in long term will damage your gearbox.

Cltuch 97 excel

dont listen to them, easiest way is: remove air intake box(3 nuts)
remove nuts surrounding the outer gearbox(about 6) and then remove the gearbox mounts
lower the gearbox and move slightly to the drivers-side. best to put a block or jack under it. then take the fly-wheel off(marking where it sits against the clutch kit)
and then pull the clutch plate off, making sure all fingers are not bent. i picked up a full clutch kit 2nd hand for 25$

I have a hyundai lantra 5 speed man it is grinding the gears when going into second gear

Auto transmission slips in 1st and 2nnd gears gearbox jumps into gear upon gearing down 1994 excel

Check the fluid level first, either too low a level or too high a level can cause erratic shifting and also if the oil smells as if its burnt there could be internal damage to clutches and brake bands. The fluid would be the first thing to chech anyway with the car driven and warmed up first and then check the oil level in neutral while car is idling.

Hyundai excel 1996 automatic will engage reverse and park but no forward gears. Gearbox was overhauled 3 years ago, new seals etc. Oil level in the main transmission is ok and no apparent leaks. Problem...

It appears you have a Forward Clutch FAILURE. Replace the trans after you get it diagnosed and verified by a professional technician. By the way, do you have a Check Engine light? If so, what is the diagnostic code? The dealership can scan the system and find any codes which may have been stored in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). If there were any 'Incorrect Gear Ratio" codes, it's most probably the trans itself.
